General practitioner Bui Dac Sang, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, advises on some herbal remedies from ingredients that anyone can easily buy.
- Lemongrass, ginger
In Oriental medicine, lemongrass has a spicy, warm taste, antiseptic, expectorant, antibacterial, diuretic, and flu-treating properties. Ginger contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, which help stimulate digestion and effectively reduce aches and pains.
To steam, use lemongrass, grapefruit leaves, basil, lemon leaves, feverfew, eucalyptus, a handful of each, boil to make medicine to drink and steam, cover with a blanket to sweat. You can add a little white salt to disinfect.
According to recommendations, full body steaming can be done 2-3 times a week, local steaming can be done 3-4 times a week.
- Perilla
Perilla has a spicy, warm taste, and is classified as a diaphoretic. The decoction and alcohol extracted from perilla leaves both have the effect of dilating blood vessels on the skin, reducing fever, and eliminating colds. Use washed perilla leaves, boil them with lemongrass, and white salt to steam and relieve colds.
In addition, drinking perilla leaf juice or chopping it into hot porridge and eating it, lying down under a blanket to sweat also reduces fatigue, cough, and fever.
- Lemon leaves, mint, marjoram
You can use lemon leaves, oregano, mint, ginger leaves, turmeric leaves, put them in a pot as medicinal herbs for steaming.
In addition, you should add fresh ginger to detoxify, clear the nose and throat or lemongrass to disinfect, treat colds, headaches, runny nose...
Before steaming, you need to clean your body. Do not shower immediately after steaming. If you steam your whole body, the steaming area must be windproof.
When your shirt is soaked with sweat, stop steaming, dry yourself, change your clothes, cover yourself with a blanket and lie down to rest. Steaming your head and face is similar, but you only need to cover your head and face with a towel. After steaming, dry your head and face.
Each steaming session lasts about 20 minutes.
After steaming, dry yourself, keep warm and avoid wind. Do not overuse and stop if you feel short of breath, chest tightness, or dizziness. Elderly people, people with chronic illnesses, or people with physical weakness... need someone to sit behind and hold their shoulders to avoid falling when steaming.
Physician Bui Dac Sang also recommends not to steam when tired and not to steam for too long.
In Oriental medicine, steaming is a remedy to treat colds, headaches, stuffy nose, sore throat, etc. However, these methods only reduce symptoms and do not cure the disease.
