U.22 Vietnam players were mentally stressed in the decisive match.
Expensive LESSONS
Coach Philippe Troussier affirmed that he did not blame U.22 Vietnam for making mistakes and his task was to analyze so that his young players could understand the root cause and not repeat those mistakes. That is what he will have to do very carefully, before the 2 very serious defensive errors in the semi-final match with U.22 Indonesia, leading to 2 goals conceded from throw-ins. In the 10th minute, the entire U.22 Vietnam defense was motionless, only Quang Thinh jumped and missed the ball, allowing Komang Trisnanda to comfortably head the ball into Quan Van Chuan's net from the 5m50 line. In the 54th minute, Quan Van Chuan punched the ball incorrectly from Alif Rifai's throw-in, allowing Ferdinan to shoot the ball off an Indonesian U.22 player, raising the score to 2-1. Those are 2 mistakes that should not be made in important matches like this. Those surprises once again showed the inexperience of the young U.22 Vietnam players.
U.22 Thailand meets U.22 Indonesia in the final
U.22 Thailand defeated U.22 Myanmar 3-0 in the men's football semi-finals of the 32nd SEA Games yesterday. The young "War Elephants" created a better game but were confronted by a Myanmar U.22 team with abundant physical strength and resilient play. However, with superior player quality, coach Issara Sritaro's team converted their advantage into goals from Teerasak Poeiphimai, Leon James and Anan Yodsangwal. Thus, U.22 Thailand will meet U.22 Indonesia in the final match taking place on May 16 at the Olympic Stadium, while U.22 Myanmar will compete for the bronze medal with U.22 Vietnam on the same day.
Central Highlands
But the problem in the first half of U.22 Vietnam was not only there. Our young players started the game slowly, unable to pull the ball into the 16m50 area of U.22 Indonesia. Even approaching the opponent's 1/3 of the field was extremely difficult when the midfield was tense and the ball circulation was slow, lacking ideas. Coach Indra Syafri's 4-2-3-1 formation with a large number of midfielders locked down the space in the middle of the field. The early goal helped them get excited and pass the ball flexibly in all directions, forcing the duo Thai Son and Duc Phu to retreat too deep.
In the most difficult moments, the left wing was still the direction of the ball that brought hope, thanks to the very good connection between Tuan Tai and Minh Trong. From the corner kick, Duc Phu's pass for Van Tung to head back to equalize 1-1 was really a way to survive with a dead ball. This time, the U.22 Indonesia defense was not alert and careless. And when Alif Rifai received a red card and left the field in the 60th minute, the opportunity once again opened up for U.22 Vietnam.
Necessary failure
Once again, luck was on U.22 Vietnam's side in the 2-2 draw, when Xuan Tien's shot caused defender Kaffa Arrizqi to score an own goal in the 79th minute. Before that, coach Philippe Troussier had gone all out when he sent Van Khang, Van Truong, Xuan Tien onto the field to join Van Tung, Van Do to form 5 attacking spearheads. A series of opportunities were created when U.22 Indonesia had to defend. But they were like stubborn boxers, patiently enduring the blows to wait for the opportunity to launch the finishing blow. Although there were still 2 extra periods to find a goal in the situation of having more players, U.22 Vietnam was too hasty and lacked alertness in the extra minutes. That haste, plus a bit of selfishness, made U.22 Vietnam players pay the price with a goal in the 90+7 minute, when the indecisive defense from afar, with more players, still allowed Muslihuddin to shoot through.
Coach Philippe Troussier: "I still believe in the future of this generation of players"
After the match, coach Philippe Troussier shared: "Any player or member of the U.22 Vietnam coaching staff is very disappointed with the result of today's match. I think the players showed their bravery in difficult times when they were behind twice and managed to equalize. Of course, losing at the last minute is very regrettable because after U.22 Indonesia received a red card, we had many opportunities to finish the match. I can only say that our squad is still very young, mostly U.20, so our practical experience is not enough to make reasonable decisions in the final moments of the match. I often say that we have to pay the price to learn a lesson. But in terms of playing style, I am satisfied with what the players did on the field, the whole team showed a clear change in their mindset. Football and sports have wins and losses and I will not blame the players. But after today's match, I think this generation of players - different from what many people think - has complete potential and in the future they can achieve great results. better.
The two goals conceded from throw-ins were not worth it, because before the match we had analyzed and prepared to counter this attack plan of U.22 Indonesia. I can only say that it was a lack of concentration and lack of experience because U.22 Vietnam arranged up to 10 players in the penalty area. They need time to perfect their skills because many players lack practical experience in the domestic professional league. On the positive side, these mistakes and the way they play can both be improved."
Coach Troussier certainly has a lot of work to do with his players. But first is the bronze medal match and this young team will need to prove their ability to stand up after defeat, to satisfy Coach Troussier's belief that "this generation is not bad and has a great future".
