Without thinking and practicing according to the "tree's" advice, Nguyen Hoang Bao Ngoc (HCMC) achieved a perfect score of 9.0 IELTS on the first test.
Nguyen Hoang Bao Ngoc, born in 2008 in Ho Chi Minh City, is currently a high school student at Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted.
At the end of February, Bao Ngoc received an email from the Testing Center with the results with an absolute IELTS score of 9.0/9.0 (9.0 Reading, 9.0 Listening, 8.0 Writing, 9.0 Speaking). "This is the first time I took the IELTS test, so I was a bit confused. Moreover, during the test, I was quite hesitant about some questions in the Reading and Listening sections," said Bao Ngoc.
The female student admitted that she could not be considered to have “trained hard” to achieve 9.0 IELTS. Because Ngoc only started focusing on IELTS preparation from June 2024 through an online teaching center, attending weekly classes. Ngoc took the IELTS test to prepare for her study abroad application and to serve other future study purposes.
Nguyen Hoang Bao Ngoc, Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted, achieved 9.0 IELTS.
In fact, about 2 weeks before the exam, she just started to review some Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing questions through applications that use AI to grade and give comments. When studying at the online center, Ngoc did not think she was serious and diligent in studying the questions.
“Actually, I don’t practice the way many people think, which means constantly studying or learning every trick in the book,” Ngoc explained and admitted that she only sees IELTS as a test to assess her true English ability.
Having been exposed to English frequently since she was a primary school student, Ngoc admits that she has a talent for foreign languages. As she grows up and has the opportunity to participate in city-level competitions for excellent students, Olympic training, and national reserve competitions for excellent students, her English knowledge has been expanded and deepened.
“Thanks to the foreign language knowledge accumulated through high school years and a little luck, I achieved a 9.0 IELTS score on my first try - a score beyond my own expectations,” Ngoc said modestly.
Ngoc's Reading and Listening skills were improved quite naturally without having to study much. In particular, Speaking is her strength and she hardly achieved a perfect score in this part.
Speaking skills are developed through conversation and listening carefully to how foreigners talk. Ngoc can grasp accents, stress, fluency when speaking and learn to adjust her voice to be like a native speaker.
When deciding to take the IELTS test, Ngoc did not immediately start practicing but only did some tests to see where her weaknesses were. After that, the female student focused on improving the weak areas instead of studying all the skills.
Regarding Listening and Reading, Ngoc only practiced a few questions to get in the mindset to do the test in the exam room.
Regarding Writing, Ngoc “revealed” that there is an effective method of using ChatGPT to write dozens of sample essays, but not to memorize. “I read, analyze what is good about that writing style, how logical the ideas are, and then come up with my own writing style,” Ngoc revealed.
Regarding Speaking, 10X also only uses AI-integrated platforms to score Speaking and review a few topics, mainly to grasp how to develop ideas when speaking and get used to using more diverse grammar and vocabulary in the test.
Ngoc advises young people not to put too much pressure on themselves, and to consider IELTS as an assessment test and equip themselves with a solid English foundation instead of doing the test mechanically.
From the secret to achieving 9.0 IELTS on the first try, Ngoc advises that the most important thing for young beginners who want to conquer a high IELTS score is to build a solid foundation before starting to practice for the test. Candidates should focus on improving general English skills such as vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and reflexes first, instead of just studying the test format.
In addition, you should create an English environment around you: read books, watch movies, listen to podcasts in English to get used to natural expressions. Ngoc personally participates and is exposed to many English activities including team learning (exposed to very intensive English), participating in the English committee of an academic project to prepare specialized English exam questions & write research papers, or reading articles on social networks, forums in English...
At the same time, young people also have a clear learning path and choose quality materials. If possible, finding a (successful) instructor or teacher to avoid going in the wrong direction will help you save time and achieve high scores faster.
With a perfect score of 9.0 IELTS, Ngoc is completely confident in conquering her dream of studying abroad. Currently, the female student has not chosen any specific schools, only planning to study abroad at universities in the US that are highly ranked in the field she is pursuing.
Minh Nguyen, a study abroad consultant in Chicago, USA, who is the guide and the person who built the study abroad preparation roadmap for Bao Ngoc, commented that this female student has a very special mindset - not only is she good at English, but she also knows how to approach the language naturally, intelligently and creatively.
Ngoc does not study for exams, but studies to understand, to apply, to develop herself. Therefore, the result of 9.0 IELTS not only reflects her ability but also proves an effective, unconstrained and inspiring learning process.
