However, Vu Ngoc Dang does not regret that Tang Thanh Ha has stopped acting.
If no one says anything about the movie, it will surely die.
- " Con Nhót nhớt chồng" is a movie that touches the emotions of viewers and will likely be the third consecutive movie that puts your name in the hundred billion club. Do you feel pressured when releasing 3 consecutive movies that are noticed with high revenue but at the same time are also scrutinized by public opinion with mixed opinions?
I don’t feel pressured but happy because I only feel sad when a movie is released in theaters and doesn’t get any attention. In this profession, when a product is released and no one says anything, even criticism, that movie is dead for sure. The same goes for Mrs. Nu’s House , Godfather, Sister Sister 2 , out of 5 criticisms, there is only 1 praise, but the revenue is very high.
Director Vu Ngoc Dang.
- Directing a film with talented actors who are dedicated to their roles like Thai Hoa and Thu Trang being both the main actress and the production director, has there ever been a time when it was difficult for Vu Ngoc Dang?
I always want to work with stars because they are smart, knowledgeable and dedicated. Meanwhile, B-list actors sometimes have to work on 8 films at once, making me tired just by scheduling them. When they are cast as A-list actors, they will only focus on one film. They listen to the director and understand. It is not only A-list stars who work like that, but working like that makes them A-list stars.
Good people always see each other's strengths and don't try to prove who is right or who is better. We didn't argue during the whole film, although before making Con Nhót nhớt chồng , we were hesitant because Thai Hoa, Thu Trang and I all have strong personalities.
Thai Hoa plays Thu Trang's father in "Con Nhot Mot Chong".
When inviting Thai Hoa, Thu Trang had to meet him at a coffee shop to talk, not call or email him because he had turned down many films and had no hope of starring in Con Nhót nhớt chồng. Therefore, when Thai Hoa agreed to accept this film, everyone did not believe it. We had a lot of fun working together even though this was the first time we worked together.
Even after the first day, there was a scene that was finished in just one take, which made Thu Trang wonder why it was so fast and asked to do another take. I found it a bit strange because when the director said ok, everyone was very happy. On the third day, Thu Trang did not ask me to film anymore.
"Bo Gia" is the first film I made where the actors were all chosen by Tran Thanh.
- During the working process, what impressed you most about Thai Hoa?
Thai Hoa is different from all the actors I have worked with. Every time he films, he gets depressed. For many people, filming is happiness, but for Thai Hoa, it is torture. He can't eat or sleep because he worries about every little thing about his role.
Thai Hoa's wife said that many times at 2am he would wake up crying, recite lines and act. Before the first day of filming, Thai Hoa often couldn't sleep. For other star actors, they usually had to give us the filming schedule half a month in advance to arrange, but Thai Hoa was different. Many times when there was a 1 hour free filming schedule, we contacted him even though it was only for 1 scene, but Thai Hoa still showed up, and the next day it was the same.
I saw Thai Hoa acting in this movie as if he was torturing himself. He was in pain, tired and too absorbed, so at first I told Thai Hoa to relax and go out, go have fun, and not worry about anything. The first day of filming was in the hospital, I was very worried but when I saw the way he walked when the doctor called, I was happy. He acted incredibly cute and with Con Nhót nhớt chồng , there was not a single second that Thai Hoa was not in character.
- You have directed many movies with stars. Have there been any movies where the actors had star disease and always wanted everyone to do things their way?
Bo Gia is the first film I made where the actors were all chosen by Tran Thanh. Before that, all the films I directed I chose the actors myself. When it came to Con Nhot Mot Chong, Thu Trang and I discussed the casting.
Up until now, when choosing actors, even if they are new and have never acted in a film, I have to investigate their background, so I have never encountered an actor with star disease. Most stars are very professional because they give their schedules in advance, and it is rare for someone to be late, but for this film, no one was late.
Vu Ngoc Dang and Tran Thanh are co-directors of the movie "Bo Gia".
- The director has always been considered the king of the film set and decides the quality of the entire film, but the two films he recently directed, "Bo gia" and "Con Nhót nhớt chồng", were both financed by the two main actors, Tran Thanh and Thu Trang. Directing a film where the main actor is also the producer with great decision-making power, are you put in a difficult position?
At first, Thu Trang showed me a script written by someone else but I thought it was terrible, the characters were bland. I told her that if she wanted me to do it, I had to rewrite another script, choose a different topic and she agreed.
We formed a team of four writers. Thai Hoa had turned down dozens of films, but because he liked the character of Mr. Xin so much, he accepted. Working with Thu Trang was easy because we respected each other. When needed, Thu Trang would give us advice but usually didn't interfere. Thu Trang wanted to focus on being an actor, while Tran Thanh decided on many other things.
Tang Thanh Ha plays the main role in the movie "Suddenly Want to Cry" directed by Vu Ngoc Dang.
I don't feel sorry that Tang Thanh Ha no longer acts in movies.
- In the long list of films you directed both for television and cinema, if you had to choose one name that you love the most and one that you hate the most, who would it be?
This is the first time I have worked with Thai Hoa and Thu Trang. Before, I was not very fond of Thai Hoa because Thai Hoa's style of filmmaking was self-torturing while I prefer a more cheerful and light-hearted atmosphere. Making Con Nhot Mot Chong was too quick, so I didn't have time to become close even though I respected Thai Hoa a lot in the profession. The person I admire the most is Tang Thanh Ha because she is incredibly cute. I don't feel sorry that Tang Thanh Ha is no longer acting, but happy for her.
Furthermore, Tang Thanh Ha can come back at any time after prioritizing her family. For someone like me, movies are my whole life, but for Tang Thanh Ha, it is just a part of life, a phase in life. I respect Thu Trang and Tang Thanh Ha, but I am closest to Luong Manh Hai, even though Hai is very stubborn and not as cute as Tang Thanh Ha (laughs out loud).
I don't have a hard time dealing with anyone I've worked with, although there have been times when someone has annoyed me by being late. I have a famous saying that all mistakes are forgivable except being late.
- Have you fired any actor for being late?
I schedule 5 minutes for each person to cast, so if anyone is late, I send them home because it will encroach on other people's time. Being 1 minute late will not cast them because if they are late for the casting, how can they guarantee that they will be able to film? Tran Thanh said that before he was famous, he was late for the casting of a film I directed and was sent home.
