Cannot lack foreign language, appearance...
As a special profession, the requirements for flight attendants, specifically flight attendants, are no less special.
The image of a graceful flight attendant is always the ideal model in the eyes of young people.
The first condition to become a flight attendant is to meet the height and weight standards, have a good-looking face, a gentle voice, no deformities, tattoos, scars or other characteristics that are not suitable for the service industry. For men, airlines in Vietnam usually require a height of 1.65m - 1.82m, age from 18 - 30, and a weight appropriate to their height. For women, each airline has different requirements, but the minimum height must be 1.58m and not exceed 1.75m. Just like men, female flight attendants must have a weight appropriate to their height.
Some airlines in the world such as the US, Japan... do not require flight attendants to be too beautiful but pay special attention to friendliness, cheerfulness, agility, health and experience. In Vietnam, almost 100% of female flight attendants of all airlines have an appearance that is often compared to beauty queens. In fact, there are also many runners-up of beauty contests or university beauty queens who have "joined" airlines and are wearing flight attendant uniforms.
Notably, although always ranked in the list of "prestigious" jobs, flight attendants are not required to have a high level of education or culture, only need to graduate from high school or higher. However, foreign language proficiency is especially important. Flight attendants in Vietnam need a TOEIC certificate of at least 550 points or a TOEFL paper certificate (550), TOEFL ibt (61), TOEFL cbt (173), IELTS (5.0). Therefore, there is currently no major for flight attendant training at universities and colleges, but those who want to pursue this career will often choose block D (math, literature, English).
When searching for candidates, airlines only require appearance and foreign language standards and then train flight attendants according to their own rules, lasting from 3 to 4 months. To be suitable to work as a flight attendant, those who study majors related to tourism, hotels, foreign languages... often have many advantages.
Nowadays, the flight attendant profession attracts more and more young people, pushing the competition rate to an incredibly high level. The average attrition rate is 92 - 95%, meaning that on average, out of 100 applicants, only 5 - 8 people become flight attendants. At major international airlines such as Emirates or Qatar, this number is even more "terrifying". For example, in 2014, Emirates Airlines received more than 256,000 applications for their flight attendant positions, but in the end, only 5,000 candidates were selected, meaning that only 1.95% of their dreams came true, much lower than the 5.2% rate of people admitted to Harvard University in 2021.
In Vietnam, this competition is a little more "relaxed". The number of candidates recruited by airlines will depend on the number of candidates needed at that time. For example, near Tet or before peak tourist seasons, airlines will recruit more or open more recruitment rounds.
In Vietnam, the beauty of flight attendants is always compared to beauty queens.

Where is the attraction?
As Thanh Nien has surveyed, the average income of flight attendants at airlines in Vietnam ranges from 16 to 26 million VND/month, depending on the airline and job position. 5-star flight attendants or chief flight attendants can earn up to 70 million VND/month. However, to achieve such an income, they must accept a busy work schedule, which can even overwhelm young people when they first start their career.
Flight attendants must be at the airport 1-2 hours in advance, depending on the domestic or international flight; not only taking care of passengers on the plane but also doing "billions and billions" of unnamed tasks such as helping customers push luggage, meeting customers' requests throughout the flight. Most of the flight attendants' time is spent on the plane. In Western countries, the job of flight attendant is also classified as a dangerous job due to the nature of the job, which requires frequent operation in an aircraft environment with limited air space for breathing.
The job is hard, the requirements are strict, the training process is rigorous, but why is the flight attendant profession still "hot"?
According to surveys by career guidance centers, in addition to income, the reason why young people always dream of becoming flight attendants is because they want to become an ideal model in the eyes of everyone. On each flight, flight attendants always impress with their bright appearance and professional demeanor. Their uniforms are also diverse in design and style, creating an eye-catching, attractive look. The image of a graceful, professional flight attendant has become a "magnet" attracting the admiring eyes of many young people.
Along with that, even without knowing the flight schedule, being a flight attendant will definitely get to set foot in many new lands. Not only on domestic flights, flight attendants also have the opportunity to explore many civilizations in the US, France, Japan, Korea... as well as make friends from all over the world. New experiences help enrich the lives of young people. Or simply, a passport full of pages and "check-in" photos all over the world is enough to bring irresistible appeal.
Moreover, a professional working environment is also an important factor, a place to hone one’s qualities and style, helping young people to improve and have more opportunities for development in the future. “Overage” flight attendants can also be transferred to commercial activities or work in the airline’s representative offices abroad.
If lucky and qualified enough to apply for major airlines in the world such as Emirates, flight attendants will not only receive a dream salary, but also have an enviable life with many privileges such as: Free accommodation in Dubai; receive discount cards or freebies at hundreds of dining, entertainment, and hotel locations in the UAE...
