The above data and comments are part of the results of the science and technology project "Survey and assessment of recruitment needs of employers in 4 provinces and cities in the Southeast region of Vietnam" chaired by Associate Professor, Dr. Ho Quoc Bang, Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City National University.

The research team conducted a survey of nearly 1,800 employers including enterprises and state agencies.

In the next 3 years, new recruitment needs will decrease by 12.61%

The research team led by Associate Professor Dr. Ho Quoc Bang also forecasted recruitment trends in the next 3 years.

Accordingly, the recruitment needs of enterprises in the next 3 years will have slight changes compared to the previous 3 years in both fields and quantity, mainly concentrated in the fields of business-management and engineering. The fields of computer-information technology, engineering technology, law, manufacturing and processing, architecture-construction, environment-environmental protection are expected to continue to recruit personnel in high numbers.

The average number of employees that 1,779 employers surveyed in 4 provinces and cities in the Southeast region plan to recruit is 79,327 people in 3 years, focusing on the above fields.

According to the study, the number of new recruits in the next 3 years is expected to decrease by 12.61% compared to the previous 3 years. Accordingly, the fields with the largest decrease are architecture and construction (down 31.18%), art (down 23.3%), mathematics and statistics (down 23.12%)... However, some fields have a slight increase in recruitment demand from 0.35% to 7.71% such as: education science and teacher training, law, veterinary medicine up 7.2%.

According to a survey by the research team, students from member schools of Ho Chi Minh City National University are given priority for recruitment by employers.

Which schools are preferred for recruitment?

Regarding recruitment trends, 67% of units responded specifically about having priorities and thinking about this when recruiting staff. Up to 33% of the remaining units did not provide information or said that they mainly assessed candidates' abilities instead of basing on candidate training facilities.

In general, all university training institutions under the Ho Chi Minh City National University system are given priority in recruitment by employers. Notably, the University of Technology has the highest priority in recruitment among all four provinces and cities in the Southeast region, followed by the University of Natural Sciences and the University of Economics and Law with priority in recruitment from 14-17%.

Outstanding high school students can study university programs in advance.

For training institutions outside the Ho Chi Minh City National University system, the recruitment trend (in terms of training institutions of graduating candidates) shows differences by field: units operating in the business-management field prioritize recruiting graduates from Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, Foreign Trade University, Campus II, Ho Chi Minh City and other universities...; units operating in the technical and technological field prioritize recruiting graduates from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry and other universities...

Skills and knowledge are only rated at a fair level.

Employers are more interested in and evaluate candidates' attitudes than their skills. Candidates' attitudes are rated as good while their skills and knowledge are only rated as fair. This means that employers expect training institutions to have plans and further enhance training to improve skills and knowledge for graduates to meet the needs of employers.

Most units expect candidates to have good attitudes such as: sense of responsibility; honesty, loyalty; progressive spirit, accepting challenges.

Masters and PhDs are proposed to have a starting salary of 10-30 million VND/month.

Regarding the starting salary that employers propose for university graduates, the majority are from 5-10 million VND/month; followed by 10-15 million VND. It can be said that the salary that employers propose is a bit low for university graduates. Meanwhile, for master's and doctoral graduates, the majority are proposed by employers with salaries from 10-30 million VND/month, according to the study.

From the difference in starting salaries for undergraduate and postgraduate levels, the research team recommends that postgraduate training should be enhanced at the same time as training high-level human resources for society.

The research team also recommends that in the coming time, it is necessary to conduct large-scale and periodic surveys on employer needs in order to forecast for the fields. The State needs to have plans and forecasts for training sectors equally in the coming time, meeting the needs of developing all training sectors equally. In addition, there should be orientation and streaming for learners after graduating from high school so that they can develop their full potential, avoiding wasting social resources when training graduates but cannot be used.
