People's Artist Phi Vu prepares for the performance
People's Artist Phi Vu has been in the profession for more than 40 years, and he will retire in just over a month. Looking back at the changes in the profession, the growth figures in 2023 of the circus industry in general and of the Phuong Nam Arts Theater in particular are an effort to overcome difficulties of the entire circus industry.
However, People's Artist Phi Vu confided that he felt there needed to be a change in the salary mechanism, because currently, even if public art units exceed the quota, the compensation for actors still has to follow the decree, the highest being only 200,000 VND.
"If any artist has a second act in the same performance, they will get an additional 150,000 VND. This fee is clearly too low compared to the hard work of circus artists," People's Artist Phi Vu shared.
People's Artist Phi Vu is a veteran artist of circus performing arts.
The Southern Arts Theater has created all conditions to increase the number of performances. So that each artist can have more income, but in reality, selling out the circus is not a regular thing nowadays.
According to People's Artist Phi Vu, the theater where he works has made efforts to organize and launch many attractive programs for the audience, creating opportunities for circus artists to express their hearts, feelings, and gratitude to the audience who have always supported the circus at Gia Dinh Park.
Circus performers are one of the most dangerous professions because of the high accident rate. 95% of circus performers are in poor health when they reach retirement age, suffering from sequelae from injuries, causing many underlying diseases when they retire.
"Our work is always challenging and even dangerous, when practicing and performing. However, the income is very low, far lower than the income of music, drama, and reformed opera. Hopefully, the salary system for circus artists will soon be improved" - People's Artist Phi Vu confided.
