According to the lawyer, drug lord El Mayo, 76, was kidnapped by Joaquín Guzmán López, the son of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. Zambada was then ambushed, handcuffed and put on a plane to the United States against his will.

U.S. law enforcement officials say Guzmán López tricked El Mayo and the organization that captured him by making him believe they were flying to northern Mexico to view real estate. Instead, the plane landed near El Paso, Texas, where U.S. authorities were waiting.
Mexican Security Minister Rosa Icela Rodríguez said that Mexican authorities were not involved in any operation to capture the drug lords but would continue to cooperate with the US. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said the arrest of Zambada and Guzmán López was an important step forward in the fight against drug trafficking.
El Mayo has pleaded not guilty to all charges in U.S. District Court in El Paso and is scheduled to appear in court on August 1. The arrests of Zambada and Guzmán López mark a major development in a decades-long effort to capture and prosecute cartel bosses in Mexico.
El Mayo led the Sinaloa cartel for decades and, to date, has never seen a day in prison. Mike Vigil, a former Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent who worked with the agency for 31 years, described Zambada as “very cunning.”
