Many rice fields in Adok commune (Dak Doa, Gia Lai) are in the flowering stage but lack of water has caused the fields to crack and dry up. People are "sitting on fire" because they are at risk of losing everything.
Many days of prolonged drought, the locality has no ponds to store water, causing many rice fields in ADok commune, Dak Doa district (Gia Lai) to dry up. It is expected that with the current level of heat and drought, the number of rice fields to dry up will increase.
Many rice fields in Dak Kut are in the stage of bearing rice but have turned yellow, making people worried and restless. Many households have had to destroy them and cut them down to feed their cattle...
Mrs. Blan (born in 1974, A Dok commune) sadly said that her family has a total of 2.5 sao of rice and 400 coffee trees. If the harvest is good, each crop yields an average of 800 kg of rice, enough food to feed 5 people in the family.
This year the rice is forming ears but the fields are dry and cracked so Mrs. Blan's family lost everything and had to cut it down to feed the cows.
Sitting and watching people cut rice to feed cattle, Mr. Sui (born in 1968, A Dok commune) said that he has been attached to the Dak Kut fields for many years. This is the first time that at the beginning of the hot season, there has been a drought that has caused the rice to dry out and burn.
“People in my hometown suffer a lot. They work hard plowing, planting, and fertilizing for months, but they still don’t necessarily get a harvest. If God doesn’t show mercy, it’s a total loss because it depends entirely on the weather,” Mr. Sui confided.
Prolonged drought, people are "sitting on hot coals"
According to local people, the reason for the above situation is that there has been no rain since the beginning of the year, the underground water level has decreased, the Dak Kut canals have dried up, there is no more irrigation water, while in the area there are no ponds or lakes to store water for support.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of A'Dok commune, said that the total rice cultivation area for the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop in the commune is 120 hectares, of which the rice area lacking water is estimated at about 46 hectares so far, with damage ranging from 70% to total loss.
According to the Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of A'Dok Commune, although irrigation has been implemented, the locality currently has no water source and is unable to overcome the situation. In the coming time, the People's Committee of the commune will continue to review and specifically count the rice areas that are suffering from drought and propose to the superiors to support production recovery according to regulations.
Mr. Nguyen Kim Anh, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dak Doa district, informed that not only in ADok commune, but also in Dak Kol field (Trang commune) there was drought, about 2.5 hectares of rice were severely damaged, with no possibility of recovery.
According to Mr. Nguyen Kim Anh, according to statistics, up to now these localities have estimated damages of nearly 580 million VND.
