Trump's unexpected choice

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên18/11/2024

US President-elect Donald Trump continues to attract attention by choosing an oil and gas company leader with opposing views on climate change for the position of Secretary of Energy.
Yesterday (Vietnam time), President-elect Trump announced his selection of Mr. Chris Wright, founder and CEO of Liberty Energy Oil and Gas Company in Denver (Colorado, USA), for the position of Secretary of Energy, Reuters reported.

Controversial

Wright has been a vocal advocate of oil and gas development, including the use of hydraulic fracturing, which is considered to have a major environmental impact, according to US media. According to CBS News, Wright is expected to support a plan to increase US oil and gas production to its maximum level in order to make the country "energy dominant" in the global market.

Liberty Energy's CEO is also said to share Mr. Trump's view on opposing the world working together to respond to climate change. "There is no climate crisis, and we are not in the process of an energy transition," Mr. Wright said last year. CBS News noted that Mr. Trump's nominee for Secretary of Energy has no political experience. Meanwhile, the Department of Energy handles policy diplomacy, manages the national petroleum reserve, and administers grant and loan programs to develop energy technologies. The Energy Secretary is also responsible for overseeing nuclear weapons, radioactive waste, and 17 laboratories across the United States. In another development, Mr. Trump yesterday also announced that he has chosen his personal lawyer, William Owen Scharf, to be assistant to the president and White House press secretary when his new term begins.

Foreign relations

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol's office said yesterday that the leader and Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru agreed to continue developing trilateral cooperation with the United States when Trump officially takes office in January next year. The two leaders of South Korea and Japan met on the sidelines of the APEC Summit in Lima, Peru, on November 16. On the same day, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his relationship with the US President-elect was off to a very good start, based on a bilateral phone call after Trump's election. "It was a positive phone call. We spoke for about 10 minutes, and it was one of the first calls he made (after learning about his election)," Reuters quoted Albanese as saying yesterday.

During the meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden on November 16 in Peru, on the sidelines of the APEC 2024 summit, the two leaders had a frank and constructive dialogue on the issue of artificial intelligence (AI). According to Reuters, Mr. Xi and Mr. Biden emphasized that the decision to use nuclear weapons must be in the hands of humans, not AI, along with the request to strengthen international cooperation and promote AI for good purposes. The White House statement further mentioned that the two leaders clearly stated that potential risks must be carefully considered, as well as the development of AI in the military field in a cautious and responsible manner. Also at the meeting, Mr. Xi noted that humanity is facing unprecedented challenges in a changing world, thereby arguing that great power competition should not become the logic of the times, but only solidarity and cooperation can help the world overcome difficulties. Xinhua News Agency quoted the Chinese President as saying that over the past four years, US-China relations have had ups and downs, but have generally remained stable and the two countries have made positive achievements in many areas. President Biden said the US-China relationship is the most important bilateral relationship in the world, stressing that the two governments have a responsibility to their two peoples and the world to ensure that competition does not turn into conflict.
