According to the General Department of Customs, in October 2023, Vietnam imported 81,440 tons of meat and meat products, worth US$158.92 million, an increase of 27.2% in volume and 7.5% in value compared to October 2022.
In October this year, Vietnam imported meat and meat products from 44 markets worldwide. Of these, India remained the largest supplier, accounting for 23.15% of the total volume and 35.37% of the total value of meat imports nationwide.
The average import price of meat and meat products from India to Vietnam decreased by 6.8% compared to the same period in 2022, to 2,982 USD/ton.
In the first 10 months of 2023, Vietnam spent $1.15 billion to import 572,110 tons of meat and meat products. Compared to the same period last year, imports of this item increased by 5% in volume but decreased by 4.9% in value.
Vietnam's imports of meat and meat products continue to increase amidst persistently low pork prices, driven by limited consumer spending and reduced purchasing power. Additionally, many collective kitchens are restructuring their production scale, leading to decreased demand for imported food.
In the first 10 months of 2023, India, the United States, Brazil, South Korea, and Russia remained the largest suppliers of meat and meat products to Vietnam.

Imports of live poultry, pork, buffalo meat, and edible offal from slaughtering pigs, buffalo, and cattle continue to increase.
Regarding pork specifically, by the end of October 2023, Vietnam had imported approximately 95,400 tons, valued at US$239.37 million, representing a 7% increase in volume and a 26.1% increase in value compared to the same period in 2022.
Despite the continuous increase in pork imports, statistics show that the amount of imported pork in the first 10 months of 2023 accounted for approximately 2.1% of domestic pork production.
In the first 10 months of 2023, the structure of the pork supply market to Vietnam changed, with the proportion of imports from Russia and the US increasing; while the proportion of imports from Brazil, Germany, Canada, and the Netherlands decreased.
Currently, live pig prices in various localities have fallen to around 47,000-52,000 VND/kg. Selling at this price, pig farmers are suffering significant losses.
Smuggled pigs and chickens flood the market, causing hardship for farmers and heavy losses for businesses. The livestock industry has already struggled through the crisis, but the influx of smuggled pigs and chickens is making the market even more difficult. Never before have livestock farmers been so pessimistic and in such dire straits.
