Ms. Tran Huong Giang - English teacher at Luong The Vinh Secondary and High School (Hanoi), pointed out how to review in the final stage as well as common mistakes when candidates take the English exam.
According to Ms. Giang, one of the mistakes in the exam preparation process is that candidates rush to practice exam questions when they have not yet mastered the basic knowledge. In addition, rushing to practice exam questions after having not reviewed knowledge for a long time will cause candidates to do poorly.
In addition, candidates can easily make mistakes or misunderstand if the questions in the exam have similar content. To avoid this mistake, candidates must read the questions carefully and underline important words. In the final stage, candidates practice too many questions but lack knowledge, making the practice ineffective.
Ms. Giang also pointed out some key knowledge sections that candidates should pay attention to: The test will keep the same structure, at the level of recognition and understanding accounting for 65%, candidates need to pay attention to phonetics, grammar, vocabulary; Language skills will have reading comprehension, speaking, and writing indirect sentences. Doing well in these knowledge sections, candidates can get 5-7 points.
In addition, students also need to learn the rules of stress, distinguish between short and long vowels, voiced and voiceless consonants, and knowledge about irregularities.
Questions about vocabulary, grammar, semantics, usage with existing knowledge and language to know the context, combine tenses, conditional sentences, narration, adverbs, contractions. In addition, you also need to pay attention to question types related to indirect knowledge, comparison, passive sentences, conditional sentences, inversion.
Reading comprehension accounts for 30% of the score. Candidates should pay attention to reading carefully and applying the skills proficiently to do well. According to Ms. Giang, in the final days of the exam, candidates need to grasp the knowledge of the textbook with exercises by topic and then do the summary test to allocate time.
Candidates can do the test and then mark themselves and learn from their mistakes in each test. Some common mistakes candidates make when taking the test are:
- Idiom/phrasal verb: the most difficult, learn the figurative meaning in the textbook and translate.
- Synonyms and antonyms: This mistake is due to the candidate's lack of vocabulary knowledge and misunderstanding of the context because polysemous words require understanding the context of the sentence, reading, translating, and reasoning.
- Pronunciation of stress: Candidates must learn the rules for this part, not randomly choose, and tips for stressing.
- Reading section: Title is not always the first or last sentence, candidates should read the whole passage carefully.
- Sentence rewriting section: Candidates easily lose points when translating meaning, grammar or confusing structures and conjunctions when rewriting sentence patterns.
- Error correction questions: This part seems to be the easiest, but it takes students a lot of time because the sentences are long and have many new words. Candidates need to identify the SV object part. Errors in sentences are divided into few or many subjects, and pairs of words are easily confused. Candidates need to read the requirements carefully and allocate time appropriately to fill in the answers. The most important thing, according to Ms. Giang, is that students must calmly choose keywords.
