Single benefit, double benefit
Digital transformation has recently become an inevitable trend in the healthcare industry, especially in hospitals. The main goal of this process is to improve the quality of healthcare services, while creating maximum convenience for patients in medical examination and treatment.
Over the years, Phu Tho General Hospital has continuously evaluated and improved its processes to meet the needs of receiving a large number of patients, reducing waiting time for medical examination, optimizing the effectiveness of diagnosis and treatment, bringing satisfaction with the quality and best medical services for patients, especially patients with health insurance.
PACS application allows online storage of all diagnostic imaging data.
One of the notable initial improvements of the facility is that all patients who make an appointment in advance through social media platforms, call centers or electronic health records applications will be given a queue number and go straight to the clinic, without having to go through any other department or office to complete the procedures. This helps patients be more proactive in going to the doctor, reducing waiting time.
In addition, to facilitate patients, the Hospital has implemented information digitization, process digitization and applied many smart solutions such as: HIS smart hospital solution, PACS application, LIS automatic sample transport system using vacuum method,...
At the same time, synchronously implement many applications on software such as electronic document management; electronic medical record management from receiving patients for examination, appointment for examination, appointment for hospital admission, prescription, daily treatment orders, appointment for tests - X-rays, receiving test - X-ray results, ending treatment, payment for hospital discharge...
At Duc Giang General Hospital, patients make an appointment similar to booking a plane ticket, choosing a specialty and appointment time.
After arriving at the hospital, people do not have to queue or get a number, but just scan the code to go straight to the doctor's office, all information is available on the system. The hospital has 12 thousand chronic outpatient records and to date, all paper chronic records have been entered into the system.
Instead of the previous time nurses had to spend time going to the warehouse, looking for patient codes, and taking out records to give to doctors, doctors can now directly view medical history on HIS software.
If a test is required, instead of printing out the order form and giving it to the patient to fold and wait for their name to be called, now the patient only needs to bring their QR code, and the medical staff in the paraclinical room will know what the patient needs to do. The digital results will be reported to the patient's phone message and the hospital management software (HIS) for the doctor to update and conclude.
At the end of the examination, while the patient is fulfilling his financial obligations at the examination table, the pharmacy has already received the prescription and picked up the medicine waiting for the patient. The application of information technology helps the preparation of medicine to start immediately after receiving the prescription from the clinic.
The smart drug dispensing solution has been deployed to dispense an average of 700-780 prescriptions per day, shortening the average drug dispensing time from 6.4 minutes to 62.8 seconds; there is no more jostling and congestion at the drug dispensing counter; and completely eliminating the need to queue at the counter.
Doctors have also benefited greatly from the digital transformation process at the hospital. Doctor Luong Dinh Trung, Department of Examination, said that in the past 2-3 years, X-ray films no longer need to be printed.
All paraclinical data such as tests, x-rays, ultrasounds, endoscopy, etc. of patients are updated to the hospital management software.
Now, doctors only need a patient code to immediately access information on patient management software without having to flip through each page of the medical record.
To realize cashless payments and facilitate patients when making payments, departments and rooms must be able to print electronic invoices while still controlling finances.
Therefore, the hospital has built a convenient digital payment process, so patient records are processed by departments and rooms immediately after the examination, not in the afternoon as before.
Thanks to information technology, the hospital transparently manages the hospital's money coming in and out from the activities of the units.
Previously, the PACS (picture archiving and communication) system had not been applied in X-ray. Instead of film, the hospital had to spend 2.5 billion VND/year to buy film, but now it only costs about 400 million VND.
90% of patients do not need to bring printed films home because they cannot be kept for long. Doctors read the conclusions immediately after taking the pictures with high-quality images thanks to the interconnected images on the system and are permanently stored in the patient's medical records.
At Phu Tho General Hospital, the facility has added the PACS application, which has brought about very positive results. The application allows for the accurate online storage of all diagnostic imaging data, including X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, ultrasounds, etc.
After the scan is completed, all images will be immediately transmitted to the diagnosing doctor's screen, meeting the requirements of clinical departments, helping doctors read the results quickly and accurately without having to wait for a printout.
Thereby, contributing to shortening waiting time, examination time, diagnosis and treatment time of both patients and doctors.
In addition, PACS software also effectively supports the connection and transfer of information between departments and rooms, supports quick reference of imaging results, connects to hospital payment, looks up old patient records, helps patients and doctors conveniently look up information when patients return for examination and treatment in the following times.
Along with that, the automatic sample transport system using the LIS vacuum method from clinical departments to the testing room is also one of the outstanding features, helping to transport samples quickly, saving time, improving sample quality and ensuring the most accurate test results.
High technology application shortens treatment time
With the goal of constantly improving the quality of medical examination and treatment, in addition to training and improving the professional capacity of medical staff, Phu Tho General Hospital also continuously updates and applies new technologies and advanced techniques to effectively support and shorten treatment time for patients.
Some applications include the RAPID artificial intelligence system in supporting stroke diagnosis and treatment, VinDr artificial intelligence software in supporting medical imaging diagnosis, implementing Telehealth remote online consultation of the Ministry of Health, digital subtraction angiography system (DSA), magnetic resonance imaging system (MRI), intravascular ultrasound system (IVUS), ... all for the goal of quick access, accurate diagnosis, timely treatment to bring the best diagnosis and treatment results for patients.
As part of the plan to improve the medical examination and treatment process, Phu Tho General Hospital is currently implementing a support model for patients in Thanh Mieu ward, Viet Tri city.
Accordingly, through GPS positioning, people in Thanh Mieu when having health problems will be connected with the nearest hospital staff, thereby receiving medical support quickly and effectively.
In the coming time, this model will be replicated throughout Viet Tri City and neighboring areas in the next phases.
Dr. Nguyen Van Thuong, Director of Duc Giang General Hospital, said that the hospital no longer has a case of a patient being discharged in the morning but still not being discharged by the afternoon because the procedures have not been completed.
Previously, the hospital payment area always had about 400 people waiting in line, and patients discharged at noon still had to wait until the afternoon for their bill. Now, about 97% of inpatients sit at their hospital beds to pay online, wait for the nurse to come out and sign the receipt, and that's it.
The Director of Duc Giang General Hospital shared that an important goal of digital transformation in hospital management is to monitor the quality of medical examination and treatment.
"Through electronic medical records, we closely monitor and understand the doctor's expertise, whether the conclusions are complete, close to the patient's condition, and whether the expertise is solid or not," said Dr. Nguyen Van Thuong.
Digitalization has met 85% of the operating procedures in Duc Giang General Hospital. To achieve the strong transformation in the past 4 years, according to the Director of Duc Giang General Hospital, the biggest initial difficulty was investment resources in infrastructure, transmission lines, internal network systems, servers, and virtual traffic systems in the hospital.
Identifying that there is still a lot of work to be done because digital transformation must be done step by step, suitable to the needs of each medical facility, more optimized, creating more convenience for users, Dr. Nguyen Van Thuong said that he wants to come here when digital transformation must monitor clinical quality. From there, we will know whether the doctor has diagnosed the disease sufficiently, used the right medicine regimen or not, and how the medicine interacts in a treatment.
