In 2020, Nguyen Gia Thieu School celebrated its 70th anniversary. Mr. Le Trung Kien, as the school's principal, asked to meet with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong to personally deliver an invitation to the General Secretary - a former student of the school's 1957-1963 school year.
Meeting the General Secretary required going through many procedural steps. However, when he officially met him, Mr. Kien could not believe that he had been received by the General Secretary for 45 minutes.
The young principal of Nguyen Gia Thieu school shared with Dan Tri reporter that he was speechless with emotion when the General Secretary greeted him as "teacher" and addressed himself as "em".

During the 45-minute conversation, the General Secretary's form of address did not change. Despite his age, Mr. Kien admitted that he was only the General Secretary's descendant.
"I tell you, I know you are very busy with Party and national affairs, but I still take the liberty of sending you an invitation to come to your old school to attend the 70th anniversary celebration of the school's founding.
But he told me: "Sir, this is a very important matter for me. I have received and read the invitation. If my health permits and if the Politburo has no urgent matters, I will attend."
And that year, he attended as a former student of the school," Mr. Kien recalled.

Meeting General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Mr. Kien brought with him a commemorative medal, a badge and a logo of Nguyen Gia Thieu School.
Receiving the gift from the school principal, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong immediately put on the badge with a respectful expression and said: "Reporting to you, this is the first time I have received a badge from my school."
Mr. Kien added that the General Secretary asked him two questions. One was "Did the school invite former teachers?". Two was "Did the school invite former students?".
With just those two sentences, Mr. Kien realized the rare tact and humility of the General Secretary.
"I understand that the General Secretary really wants to meet his teachers and classmates again at that special event.
I told him that the school invited all the teachers who used to work at the school, and all the students who used to study at the school. Hearing that, he was very happy.

The person he wanted to see the most was probably the head teacher Le Duc Giang. Teacher Giang was over 90 at that time, and had taken the train from Quy Nhon. Perhaps deep down, he knew that it might be the last time the two teachers and students met," Mr. Kien shared.
General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong studied at Nguyen Gia Thieu School for 4 years in secondary school and 2 years in high school (from grade 5 to grade 10). He was the class monitor of class 10B, which was headed by teacher Le Duc Giang.
During the 70th anniversary celebration and receiving the Third Class Independence Medal of the school, the General Secretary said: "I will never forget the profound memories, the teaching efforts of teachers, the help of friends, and the good impressions of 6 consecutive years of studying at the beloved Nguyen Gia Thieu school."
Nguyen Gia Thieu School (now Nguyen Gia Thieu High School) was established in 1950, with its first campus in Lac Tho village, Thuan Thanh, Bac Ninh. In 1951, the school moved to its current location at No. 27, Lane 298, Ngoc Lam Street, Long Bien District, Hanoi.
In recent years, Nguyen Gia Thieu School has always been in the top 10 high schools with the highest 10th grade entrance scores in Hanoi.
This year, the school has the national valedictorian of the high school graduation exam, Nguyen Ha Nhi, a student of class 12D1. She scored 57.85 points with 3 scores of 10 in the social science combination exam (history, geography, civics).
