Vietnam "contributed" two familiar names in the domestic martial arts world, including Nhung Kate and Ngo Thanh Van, to two films with brands or "hot" topics that are currently receiving attention.
The participation of these actresses shows the efforts of Vietnamese talents in reaching out to the world and participating in notable projects. The two films below will be released to international audiences this coming September.
Velvet Kate and the series of "universe" John Wick
Mini series “The Continental: From the World of John Wick” just released a trailer with the appearance of actress Nhung Kate in a supporting role.
The movie title The Continental is taken from the name of the hotel where assassins like John Wick stay. “The Continental: From the World of John Wick” (The Continental Hotel: From the World of John Wick) lasts 3 episodes, corresponding to 3 nights. This is a prequel to explore the origin of this hotel, through the perspective of the villain Winston Scott (Colin Woodell).
In the film, Nhung Kate (real name Duong Hong Nhung) plays Yen. According to the actress, this character plays a rather important role and is not a positive one. Information from IMDb shows that Yen will appear in all 3 episodes. She appears many times in the trailer, in a series of street shooting scenes, group fights or hand-to-hand fights.
Kate Velvet said she had to wait 3 years to join the project. As soon as her manager informed her that there was a movie recruiting, the actress immediately sent in her application and auditioned. After a week, she was accepted to participate. Nhung Kate's companion and supporter is actor and producer Johnny Tri Nguyen.
The film premiered on September 22 on the online platform Peacock, owned by NBC, USA.
Ngo Thanh Van in a horror film about AI
Also in September, Hollywood will release a movie called “The Creator” (tentative translation: The Creator). The film is a science fiction genre, taking the post-apocalyptic motif of the war between humans and artificial intelligence (AI).
Ngo Thanh Van (international stage name: Veronica Ngo) plays a half-human, half-robot character named Kami. She appears briefly in the trailer but leaves an impression on viewers thanks to her rather unique appearance, wearing blue eyes. There is a cut on the character's face, revealing the machine-like part inside.
The film stars John David Washington, son of veteran actor Denzel Washington, as Joshua, who must hunt down the Builder - the architect of the machines of destruction and the man mentioned in the film's title.
Not much information has been revealed about Ngo Thanh Van's role yet. The film will be released to international audiences from September 29.
Besides this movie, Ngo Thanh Van had a supporting role in many famous projects such as "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" (Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi, 2017), "The old guard" (Immortal Warriors, 2020) with Charlize Theron, The princess (The Princess, 2022) with Joey King.
Last July, actress Maggie Q also starred in the action-thriller “Fear of the Night.” The Vietnamese-American actress plays a retired military veteran who unexpectedly has to fight against a mysterious group of attackers with a ruthless, mass-murdering agenda. However, “Fear of the Night” was not well received by the audience. While some said the film was entertaining, many also criticized the film for lacking logic and causing disappointment. Maggie Q was the only bright spot, receiving attention and love from the audience, but it was not enough to save the film. Maggie Q was born in Hawaii, to an Irish-Polish father and a Vietnamese mother.
