More than just a beverage
Lemons have many health and beauty benefits and have a distinctive flavor, commonly used in cooking. Accordingly, lemons are a fruit rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, while also providing calcium, iron, potassium and fiber.
Hot summer is when lemon is used a lot to quench thirst.
Dr. Phung Tuan Giang, President of the Vietnam Institute for Research and Development of Traditional Medicine, said that lemon is a familiar fruit, but not everyone knows that lemon has detoxifying effects, and lemon juice helps remove toxins from the body.
Use lemon every day to take care of your skin (helps prevent premature aging) and increase resistance to disease.
Citrus fruits like lemons contain a large amount of antioxidants and beneficial terpenes, including flavonoids, flavones, triterpenoids, and limonoids that help protect the body from the damaging effects of free radicals that can damage cells and cause disease.
Nowadays, the rate of oxidative stress is very high, which is a direct result of the modern industrialized lifestyle, so adding antioxidant foods to our diet is very important," emphasized physician Phung Tuan Giang.
Boost immunity and skin health
Lemons are rich in vitamin C, containing 1/3 of the recommended daily dose in just one lemon. We all know that vitamin C is important for the functioning of the immune system.
Vitamin C helps protect against pathogens and promotes the elimination of oxidants. It plays a role in killing bacteria and fighting infections, improving respiratory conditions and reducing inflammation.
Citrus fruit juices such as lemon, orange, grapefruit... have anti-aging effects.
Lemon is also a refreshing and hydrating drink. Drinking lemon water helps the body stay hydrated and eliminate toxins. Research shows that water consumption plays an important role in human activity and performance, and it also supports proper energy supply.
A study published in the journal Food Chemistry shows that citrus juices such as lemon, orange, grapefruit, etc. have anti-aging effects due to their antioxidant content and ability to prevent premature aging caused by oxidative stress.
“Adding lemon to your diet can help reduce the formation of wrinkles and the negative effects of exposure to ultraviolet rays,” informed Dr. Phung Tuan Giang.
According to physician Tuan Giang, in addition to the above effects, studies show that providing enough water for the body by drinking lots of water or eating foods that provide water will support the digestive process.
By enhancing the flavor of water, lemon water can promote better hydration and help detoxify the digestive tract.
“For those who have difficulty with slow digestion or constipation, they should drink a glass of honey lemon water every day,” Dr. Phung Tuan Giang instructed.
Not only that, lemon juice is also an extremely effective weight loss drink. If we do not use soft drinks, sweet fruit juices and other sugary drinks; instead, we use lemon juice, we will significantly reduce the amount of calories we consume each day.
Adding lemon to your diet may help reduce wrinkle formation and the negative effects of UV exposure.
Animal studies have also shown that lemons contain properties that can reduce body weight and food consumption in mice.
Finally, according to Dr. Phung Tuan Giang, lemon supports cardiovascular health. Accordingly, lemon is a source of magnesium, potassium and vitamin C, which are substances that help support cardiovascular health.
An animal study found that the antioxidant activity in lemon juice and lemon peel helped prevent the development of atherosclerosis in rabbits.
A clinical study conducted in 2016 found that consuming garlic and lemon juice improved cholesterol and blood pressure levels in adults aged 30–60 years with high cholesterol.
Does lemon have any side effects?
Drinking lemon water is an easy way to replenish your water, antioxidants, and vitamin C intake. Lemon water can help support heart, skin, and digestive health, and may aid weight loss, fight oxidative stress, and boost immunity.
At home, we just need to squeeze lemon juice into a glass of water, add lemon slices, and fresh mint leaves. In addition, we can add a little honey to enhance the flavor of lemon juice. Or we can use lemon to mix salads, make dipping sauces and many dessert recipes.
Answering the question of whether lemons have side effects, Dr. Phung Tuan Giang, a traditional medicine practitioner, said that lemons are safe and pose the least risk to humans. A small number of people are allergic to lemons or citrus fruits, which can cause rashes, swelling, red skin, asthma, and other food allergy symptoms.
Lemons are also used in salad dressings, dipping sauces and in many dessert recipes.
"Drink 1 to 2 glasses of lemon juice every day. Although rich in nutrients, it also contains a high amount of citric acid, which means that if overused, it can erode tooth enamel and cause tooth sensitivity," informed Dr. Phung Tuan Giang.
