At the U.16 Southeast Asia tournament, coach Tran Minh Chien's students are showing quite impressive performance. After 3 matches, U.16 Vietnam has 2 wins, 1 draw and is at the top of the BU16 table. Vietnam has the same 7 points as U.16 Cambodia, but U.16 Vietnam is ranked higher due to a better goal difference. Notably, U.16 Vietnam's 2 wins were both with very big scores: winning U.16 Brunei 15-0 and U.16 Myanmar 5-1.
According to the tournament rules, the winner of Group A will meet the winner of Group C, and the winner of Group B will meet the second-placed team with the best record. Therefore, U.16 Vietnam will have to wait for their opponent after the final match of Group C on the afternoon of June 29.
Vietnam U.16 team has impressive performance at the Southeast Asian U.16 tournament
In this round, U.16 Thailand won 3-1 against U.16 Malaysia. The young players of the "War Elephants" were behind in the first half but rose up strongly and scored 3 consecutive goals. In the parallel match, U.16 Australia also easily defeated U.16 East Timor with a score of 12-0 in a completely superior match. With these results, U.16 Australia ranked first in Group C (7 points, goal difference +14), thereby winning a ticket to the semi-finals. U.16 Thailand ranked second in Group C with the same 7 points, but a worse goal difference of +8.
Thailand U16 has 7 points like Cambodia U16 in Group B, but has a better goal difference (+8 compared to +7). This result is enough for Thailand U16 to enter the semi-finals as the second-best team in the group and meet Vietnam U16. In the Southeast Asian U16 tournament 2 years ago, the two sides met in the semi-finals and Vietnam U16 won 2-0.
The match between the two teams will take place at 3pm on July 1. Meanwhile, the remaining match between U.16 Indonesia and U.16 Australia will take place at 7:30pm on the same day. Notably, according to the Southeast Asian Football Federation, both matches will use VAR technology. In addition, VAR will also be applied in the final match of the tournament.

The challenge for U.16 Vietnam in the semi-finals is huge.
After passing the group stage, coach Tran Minh Chien shared: “I am happy to achieve the set target. U.16 Vietnam created many opportunities right from the start of the match but could not finish. That was a pity in this match. This is the first tournament, not only for Vietnamese players but also for other teams when mistakes can easily happen. It is very difficult to meet Thailand or Australia in the semi-finals. This is the first international tournament for U.16 Vietnam. The players rarely play in the national tournament because the U.17 National Finals take place after this tournament. They only have 5-6 matches so they are at a disadvantage. However, U.16 Vietnam played with excitement and played well to reach the semi-finals.”
