On January 13, according to information from the Central Tropical Hospital, female patient VTT (54 years old, Hai Phong) was admitted to the hospital in a state of complete paralysis from the neck down.

According to the patient's family, a week before, Ms. T was diagnosed with dengue fever. She was treated until her fever went away and her condition stabilized. However, when she returned home, she still felt pain in her neck and shoulders, so her family took her to a private clinic and gave her an injection directly into her neck and shoulders.

A day later, Ms. T had a fever again, accompanied by paralysis of both legs that gradually spread to both arms and loss of sensation in the entire area from the waist down. Ms. T was immediately hospitalized with a diagnosis of bacterial infection - spondylitis and transferred to the Emergency Department, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases.

The patient was rushed to the emergency room after experiencing paralysis after an injection at a private clinic.

When admitted to the hospital, Ms. T was conscious but completely paralyzed from the neck down, showing signs of respiratory muscle paralysis, requiring mechanical ventilation and maintenance of vasopressor drugs.

According to Dr. Pham Thanh Bang, Emergency Department, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, Ms. T was diagnosed with septicemia - cervical myelitis with staphylococcus. MRI scan results showed diffuse spinal cord damage, spinal cord edema causing loss of motor and sensory function.

After treatment, the patient's infection stabilized but her quadriplegia improved slowly. Doctors combined traditional medicine and electroacupuncture rehabilitation, and Ms. T has now partially recovered her upper limbs.

Dr. Bang added that this is a rare case of pulpitis caused by gram-positive bacilli, especially staphylococci.

“Staphylococcus mostly enters through intravenous injection, bacteria directly invade causing diffuse osteomyelitis (does not cause meningitis) causing the entire bone marrow to lose function with clinical manifestations of paralysis,” Dr. Bang emphasized.

Therefore, doctors recommend that when people are sick, they should go to specialized medical facilities for examination, diagnosis and treatment, avoid going to unlicensed clinics, or clinics that do not operate properly, or medical equipment that has not been properly sterilized, causing unfortunate consequences.
