Six people were bitten by a rabid dog in quick succession.

On March 13th, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of An Giang province sent a document to the Department of Health and the People's Committees of districts, cities, and towns in An Giang province requesting feedback to be submitted to the Provincial People's Committee for a directive on strictly implementing measures to prevent and control rabies in animals.

Specifically, the An Giang Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine reported that on March 7th and 8th, a stray dog ​​that had not been vaccinated against rabies in O Long Vi commune, Chau Phu district, showed symptoms of rabies and bit three people. Test results from the Regional Veterinary Department VI confirmed that the dog tested positive for the rabies virus.

On March 10th, another stray dog ​​in Binh Duc hamlet, Binh Phu commune, Chau Phu district, bit three more people. Following reports from residents, the Chau Phu District Livestock and Veterinary Station apprehended the dog. Tests confirmed the dog was positive for rabies.

According to the An Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, these are the first two outbreaks of rabies in animals in the province since the beginning of 2024. The main reasons are: the failure to organize rabies vaccination for dogs according to regulations; the lack of enforcement of penalties for violations of regulations on managing pet dogs and rabies vaccination; limited awareness among some people about the dangers and regulations on rabies prevention and control; and very limited inter-sectoral coordination, especially between the veterinary sector, the health sector, and the authorities in some localities.
