(CLO) UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen said the United Nations is committed to providing all necessary support to the Syrian people, when meeting Syrian rebel leader Ahmed Al-Sharaa and interim Prime Minister Mohammad al-Bashir in Damascus on Monday.

After arriving in the capital Damascus on Sunday, Mr Pedersen said Syria needed to increase humanitarian aid amid “tremendous” changes, offering hope to a country recovering from a 13-year war.

Mr Pedersen arrived in Syria a week after opposition forces, led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTC), overthrew the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

Responding to questions from the press upon his arrival in Damascus, Mr. Pedersen noted that major changes have taken place since the fall of the Assad regime. "This change brings great hope, but we also know that there are still many challenges ahead. So we have to act correctly from the beginning," he said.

He stressed that it was necessary to start a political process that included all Syrians, and that this process "must obviously be led by Syrians themselves".

The second issue, according to Mr. Pedersen, is ensuring that state institutions function effectively, especially in providing public services, maintaining order and security, which is "extremely important".

On the humanitarian crisis, he said it was necessary to ensure that Syria receives "immediately enhanced humanitarian assistance" for its people inside the country as well as for all refugees who want to return home. "This is very important," he stressed.

On the issue of economic recovery, he said it needed to be resolved quickly. "We need to make sure that this issue is resolved promptly," he said. He also hoped that sanctions would be lifted soon, so that solidarity could be seen in the reconstruction of Syria.

Ultimately, Mr. Pedersen said that justice must be served. He insisted that perpetrators across Syria must be held accountable and given a fair trial. “We need to ensure this through a credible justice system, and without any reprisals,” he concluded.
