The Horn of Africa nation is one of the world's poorest, suffering from decades of civil war, a bloody Al-Shabab insurgency, and frequent climate disasters.
"Somalia continues to face a complex and protracted humanitarian crisis," the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stressed.
According to OCHA, the country is currently facing "widespread drought conditions due to low rainfall during the October-December period".
The appeal was launched on January 20, in collaboration with the Somali government, to “support an estimated 4.6 million of the country’s most vulnerable people”.
Somalia is currently facing serious turmoil, including armed conflict, terrorism and a humanitarian crisis. The Al-Qaeda-linked militant group Al-Shabaab continues to carry out terrorist attacks against military and civilian targets.
After decades of conflict, erratic rainfall patterns and widespread displacement, millions of people in Somalia are now hungry and food insecure, according to the World Food Programme (WFP).
