On February 17, the United Nations Security Council met to discuss the situation in Ukraine, amid new developments in the conflict in this country.

According to a VNA correspondent in New York, speaking at the meeting, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Peacebuilding Miroslav Jenča reaffirmed that any peace agreement in Ukraine must respect the country's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.

Mr. Miroslav Jenča stressed that diplomatic efforts should focus on achieving a just and lasting peace; the United Nations encourages dialogue between the parties concerned, and welcomes any genuine efforts and initiatives with the full participation of Ukraine and the Russian Federation aimed at de-escalating the conflict and minimizing its impact on civilians.

The senior UN official also reiterated the stance of UN Secretary-General António Guterres that "any peaceful solution must respect the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, in accordance with the UN Charter, international law and UN General Assembly resolutions."

The Security Council meeting comes as the Trump administration seeks to bring the parties involved to a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Bloomberg news agency quoted government sources as saying that Washington wants Ukraine to reach a ceasefire agreement with Russia before Easter this year.

Last week, President Trump had a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss this issue./.
