The United Nations meets to elect five new judges of the International Court of Justice. |
On November 9, the United Nations General Assembly and the United Nations Security Council met to elect five new judges of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the 2024-2033 term, including representatives from Mexico, the United States, Romania, Australia and South Africa (out of a total of nine candidates).
This is an election held every three years for one-third of the members of the ICJ.

The ICJ is the foremost international legal body, whose main function is to resolve legal disputes submitted by states and to give advisory opinions on legal issues referred to it by United Nations agencies.
The Court consists of 15 judges elected simultaneously by the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council, who are persons of good moral character, high professional qualifications and great prestige in the field of international law.
The term of office of an ICJ judge lasts for nine years.
