The First Danang Asian Film Festival 2023 will take place from May 9-13 in Danang city.
The first Da Nang Asian Film Festival 2023 (Da Nang Asian Film Festival-DANAFF I) is directed by the People's Committee of Da Nang City, chaired by the Vietnam Film Promotion and Development Association (VFDA), in coordination with the Department of Culture and Sports of Da Nang City and other departments, branches, organizations and individuals at home and abroad.
DANAFF I selects and honors outstanding cinematographic works, rich in humanistic values, with new discoveries and unique artistic expressions; encourages new talents of Vietnamese cinema and the Asia-Pacific region. At the same time, it widely introduces to the public new cinematographic works, with high content and artistic values of Asian and Vietnamese cinema and selected films of world cinema.
DANAFF I has 26 films from Vietnam; 10 films from Asia-Pacific. The highlight of the Film Festival is the competition of films in 2 categories: "Asian Film Award" and "Vietnamese Film Award" will be evaluated by the Jury of experts in the field of Vietnamese and international cinema, selecting and awarding 12 official awards.
In the Asian Film category, the President of the Jury is Ms. Moon So-ri, a Korean film actress, director and screenwriter. Ms. Moon So-ri received the Best New Actress Award at the Venice Film Festival for the film Oasis (2000). Her leading role in the film A Good Lawyer's Wife (2003) helped Ms. Moon So-ri win many Best Actress awards at many film festivals, including the Stockholm International Film Festival (Sweden), the Seattle International Film Festival (USA), the Korean Film Awards, etc.
She was the first Korean actress to be invited to be a jury member at the Venice Film Festival in 2016. Moon So-ri's first film as a screenwriter and director, "The Running Actress" (2017), won the Best New Director award at the 27th Buil Film Awards (Korea). For her contributions at the 2018 Hawaii International Film Festival, Moon So-ri was honored with the Halekulani Lifetime Achievement Award.
Members of the Jury for the Asian Film category also include People's Artist Nhu Quynh; producer and screenwriter Phan Dang Di (Vietnam); director and screenwriter Adilkhan Yerzhanov (Kazakhstan) and Mr. Stephen Jenner - Vice President of Communications for the Asia-Pacific region, Motion Picture Association of America.
In the Vietnamese Film category, the Chairman of the Jury is director, screenwriter, producer Victor Vu, a film director who has won many awards in Vietnam.
The film "Thien Menh Anh Hung" (2012) by director Victor Vu won the Jury Award at the 2nd Hanoi International Film Festival (HANIFF), the Golden Kite Award and the Best Film Director Award at the Kite Award - Vietnam Cinema Association Awards. The film "I See Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass" (2015) won the Golden Lotus Award, the Best Director Award and the Best Film Award voted by the audience at the 2015 Vietnam Film Festival, the Special Jury Award at the 3rd HANIFF in 2016 and the Best Film Award at the Silk Road International Film Festival in 2015 (China). Director Victor Vu has also achieved many successes with widely released films...
In this Film Category, there are also members of the Jury: People's Artist Lan Huong; director, producer, screenwriter Aditya Assarat (Thailand); producer Yulia Evina Bhara (Indonesia) and screenwriter Tran Khanh Hoang.
At DANAFF I, the Organizing Committee will award the "NETPAC Award" to the best Vietnamese film as decided by the Jury of the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema and the "Audience Award" to the most favorite Vietnamese film voted by the audience among the films participating in "Today's Vietnamese Cinema".
The NETPAC Jury President is Ms. Bina Paul - Co-Chairwoman of NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Cinema in Asia and the Pacific). She is also the Director of the Kerala International Film Festival and the Kerala Short Film and Documentary Film Festival (India), a member of the Jury of many prestigious film festivals in the world in Berlin (Germany); Durban (South Africa); Locarno (Switzerland)... Ms. Bina Paul also won the Best Film Editing award at the Kerala International Film Festival in 1998, 2000 and 2008 and at the National Film Festival (India) in 2002 and 2003. Besides editing, Ms. Bina Paul is also a documentary director.
The members of the Jury are Ms. Ly Phuong Dung - Deputy Director of the Department of Cinema and director, screenwriter Asif Rustamov (Azerbaijan).
During the 5 days of DANAFF I, there will be many outstanding activities: Film screening program at Le Do, CGV and Galaxy cinemas with 86 screenings along with the introduction of film crews at the cinema; Outdoor film screening program for 3 nights at APEC Park; Workshop "Japanese cinema - successful experience and direction of production cooperation with Vietnam"; Workshop "Nurturing talent" with two basic and advanced acting classes; Tour program of Da Nang's famous attractions...
The opening, closing and award ceremonies will be broadcast live on Vietnam Television (VTV) and relayed on Da Nang Radio and Television Station.
