On the evening of November 4, at Thuy Dinh stage, Hoa Lu Ancient Town, Ninh Binh, a cultural event will take place that attracts special attention from traditional art lovers: Ninh Binh Xam Singing Festival 2023. Before the festival, according to records in many localities of Ninh Binh, the atmosphere at Xam clubs is very exciting. In Yen Mo, the land known as the homeland of Xam art, there are up to 4 Xam Singing Clubs practicing day and night to prepare for the festival.
It must be said that this is not the first time this event has been held. However, the difference of this festival is that it has attracted the participation of a relatively large number of Xam clubs, with 20 clubs from 10 provinces and cities across the country, with nearly 200 actors and musicians. Among them are many groups from big cities such as: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Quang Ninh, Hai Phong ...
As everyone knows, the above mentioned localities are places where cultural and artistic activities are extremely developed. Art lovers today have many choices, but many still have a special love for the art of Xam singing. That proves the strong vitality of this traditional art in contemporary cultural life.
In Ninh Binh - known as the cradle of Xam singing art, home to the late famous Xam singing artist Ha Thi Cau, the last street singer of the 20th century, Xam singing art is also being actively preserved, maintained and promoted by the Department of Culture.
After Mr. Cau passed away, his students and fans actively collected the Xam melodies that Mr. Cau often sang when he was alive, established Xam clubs and taught Xam to many people.
Before the 2023 Ninh Binh Xam Singing Festival took place, according to records in many localities of Ninh Binh, the atmosphere at Xam clubs was very exciting. Meritorious artist Pham Kim Ngan, Head of Kim Ngan Xam Singing Club, Yen Nhan Commune (Yen Mo District) said: As soon as we received information from the Department of Culture and Information of Yen Mo District about organizing the 2023 Ninh Binh Xam Singing Festival, we gathered the members of the Club to carry out the practice plan.
The club has more than 10 members, many of whom are young. According to the assignment of the Department of Culture and Information, our club will compete in 3 Xam performances. The club has practiced the songs fluently, has full costumes and props, and is all ready to attend the Festival.
Kim Ngan Xam Singing Club is one of the clubs that gathers many young members with good singing voices and passion for Xam art. This is also one of the few Xam clubs that have participated in many festivals, performances, exchanges and has a long history of achievements with many medals and awards.
Meritorious Artist Kim Ngan added: Participating in the Festival, in addition to Kim Ngan Xam Club (Yen Nhan), Ha Thi Cau Xam Singing Club (Yen Phong) which are traditional Xam clubs, Yen Mo district also has 2 more Xam clubs participating, Yen Dong Commune Club and Yen Thinh Town Club. These are 2 clubs participating for the first time. This shows that Xam has made a strong development in the movement, reaching further and not just limited to traditional clubs.

We also hope that more festivals will be held, so that we can exchange, learn, perform, and have the opportunity to introduce to the public the good and beauty of Xam singing art. The art is considered a "cultural specialty" of our hometown Yen Mo. Up to now, Xam singing has spread to many localities in the province. Districts such as Gia Vien, Hoa Lu, Yen Khanh and Tam Diep city all have clubs participating in the Festival. Like Kim Son district, a locality that has a strong position in Ca Tru, this Festival also introduced a fairly strong Xam singing club with many members who are young actors, both talented and beautiful. The Xam melodies they brought to the Festival are as unique and attractive as their Ca Tru specialty.
For Hoa Lu district, the Traditional Arts Club of Dong Hoi village, Ninh An commune was chosen to represent Hoa Lu district to participate in the Festival. Mr. Ta Quang Thuyet, an active member of the Traditional Arts Club of Dong Hoi village, Ninh An commune, said that an art form that wants to develop needs to be widely promoted to the masses, accepted by the masses and become a part of their spiritual life. The same goes for Xam singing art, it is necessary to organize festivals and performances so that the public can know about it, see the good and beauty of Xam, from there they will love it and have the awareness to preserve, propagate, conserve and develop it...
According to the plan, the opening and performance program will take place continuously for 2 days at Thuy Dinh stage, Hoa Lu ancient town. This is a place that attracts a lot of tourists. This will create more favorable opportunities for tourists to enjoy, get acquainted with, and know the art of Xam singing.
And according to the expectations of the Festival Organizing Committee, this is also an opportunity to promote and introduce the folk performing art of Xam singing - a national intangible cultural heritage; at the same time, it is an activity to raise awareness of all levels, sectors and communities in restoring, preserving and promoting the values of Xam singing art, which is a premise for building a national dossier to submit to UNESCO to inscribe Xam singing art into the List of intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent protection of humanity.
