While Spain are all too familiar with the European Championship trophy, England have yet to lift the iconic trophy. Luis de la Fuente’s stars and Gareth Southgate’s promising group of players both endured a difficult semi-final, as Spain denied France the chance to dominate the EURO, while the Three Lions roared to a thrilling victory over the Netherlands to reach their fourth final. When the final whistle blows, the final between Spain and England will have completed a circle.
A few weeks after Lee Carsley’s England Under-21s beat Spain Under-21s to win the European Championship, Spain’s women’s team took the world by storm with a similar 1-0 win in the World Cup final, making this encounter all the more intriguing. While England were highly regarded ahead of the tournament, De la Fuente’s Spain were not given much attention heading into their EUROs, especially after their recent failures at major tournaments.

However, La Roja made a complete mockery of the so-called “group of death”, taking a maximum nine points from 2018 World Cup runners-up Croatia, reigning European champions Italy and underdogs Albania. Spain finished the group stage as the only nation with a 100% record in both points and defence. After beating Georgia in the round of 16, Spain then overcame their biggest fears against hosts Germany in the quarter-finals, then France in the semi-finals. Excluding last year’s UEFA Nations League success, Spain’s men’s national team have now booked their place in their sixth major final. The continental champions of 1964, 2008 and 2012 will not only win another European title, but will also make football history: if they beat England, they will become the first European men’s team to win four consecutive major finals. Of course, a fourth success at EURO 2024 would also make Spain the most successful team in the history of the tournament.
