Libya calls on EU to stand together to deal with illegal migration

On March 17, Libyan Interior Minister Emad al-Tarabelsi called on the European Union (EU) and countries affected by illegal migration from Libya to support the North African country in dealing with this situation.

The statement was made by Mr. Emad al-Tarabelsi during a meeting in the capital Tripoli with ambassadors and chargé d'affaires of EU countries and the African Union (AU) in Libya, as well as representatives of the EU Delegation, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Accordingly, the Libyan Interior Minister called on countries to effectively support the country by strengthening security at its southern border, providing modern equipment and technology to monitor illegal migration activities, accelerating the voluntary deportation of illegal migrants in coordination with international organizations, and combating smuggling and human trafficking networks through strict measures and targeting organized crime dens.

Libyan authorities noted that the North African country will not bear the burden of illegal migration alone and will never allow itself to become a place of settlement for migrants, warning that the continued uncontrolled flow of migrants will worsen the security and social situation, not only in Libya but in the entire region.

Mr. Al-Tarabelsi stressed that the final solution to the illegal migration crisis begins with protecting the southern border and not just by monitoring the coastline “as the EU has emphasized.”

In addition, the Libyan Interior Minister also affirmed the need to launch development projects in countries considered to be the source of the migration wave to limit illegal migration from the root.

Due to the instability in Libya since the fall of leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011, many migrants, mainly from Africa, have chosen to cross the Mediterranean from Libya to Europe in the hope of changing their lives.
