On the evening of May 11, the United Nations (UN) Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, expressed concern over reports that heavy weapons were being used in fighting in the city of Al-Fashir in this African country.
Wounded civilians are being taken to hospitals and many are trying to flee fighting in the Darfur region, Ms. Nkweta-Salami noted.
“I am deeply concerned about the outbreak of clashes in (Al-Fashir) despite repeated calls for all parties to the conflict to refrain from attacking the city. I repeat – the violence threatens the lives of more than 800,000 civilians living there,” the official said.
I am also concerned about reports of heavy weapons use and attacks in densely populated areas in the city centre and suburbs (Al-Fashir), resulting in many casualties.”
In April, the US warned of an imminent military attack on Al-Fashir, transforming it from a potential humanitarian hub into the centre of a new front in the country's civil war.
Earlier on May 11, at least 13 civilians were killed in an attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on a village in Gezira state in central Sudan.
In a statement on Facebook, the Resistance Committee in the city of Wad Madani said that RSF attacked the village of Al-Hurqa, located east of Wad Madani, the capital of Gezira state, killing 13 civilians.
Several others injured in the attack have been taken to hospital. RSF has not yet commented on the allegation.
The RSF took control of Gezira state in December 2023 after the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) withdrew from the city of Wad Madani.
According to the latest report released by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), since the outbreak on April 15, 2023, the conflict between the SAF and RSF has killed 15,550 people, while the number of displaced people has reached 8.7 million.
