LG sets new record for data transmission distance with 6G technology

VietNamNetVietNamNet29/09/2023

This is the longest recorded distance for 6G wireless data transmission outdoors in an urban area to date. The test was conducted in collaboration with LG U+ and took place in early September 2023 at LG Sciencepark in Magok, Seoul. This impressive result demonstrates LG's leadership in 6G telecommunications technology research and development.

The commercial application of 6G technology is experiencing breakthrough developments thanks to increased data transmission distance.

This new achievement follows the company’s successful 2022 test of 6G wireless data transmission over a distance of 320 meters in Berlin, Germany. LG and Fraunhofer jointly developed the core equipment for 6G technology, including a multi-channel power amplifier and a low-noise receiver amplifier, which optimizes performance and improves output power by more than 50%.

The recent test results at LG Sciencepark are of great significance in the research of 6G technology, not only because LG has increased the 6G wireless data transmission distance to 500m (the standard distance between high-power base stations in urban areas), but also because it has helped confirm the possibility of using 6G technology in various situations. This has brought a step closer to the commercialization of 6G communications.

The development of 5G and 6G telecommunications will significantly increase data speeds, provide ultra-low latency, highly reliable data transmission, and combine communications and artificial intelligence (AI), as well as communications and sensing. In addition to delivering rich multimedia experiences, the enhanced capabilities of 6G will be critical to a number of future business operations, including autonomous driving and mobility solutions, the metaverse, smart homes, and smart factories.

Discussions on 6G network standardization are expected to begin around 2025, with commercialization expected in 2029. LG's investments in research and development, strategic partnerships, and successful technology demonstrations demonstrate the company's readiness and determination to lead the global transition to 6G.

In October 2023, the company will share its key achievements in developing 6G technology at the LG 6G Tech Festa, co-hosted by LG U+.

LG is affirming its pioneering position in research and application of 6G technology.

In 2019, LG established the LG Electronics-KAIST 6G Research Center in collaboration with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). LG has also established partnerships with various research institutes to develop 6G technology, including the Fraunhofer Institute (Germany), the Korea Research Institute of Science and Standards (KRISS), etc.

LG is currently the only Korean company to be appointed as the chair of the Next G Alliance, a wireless technology consortium led by the Telecommunications Industry Association (ATIS) in the United States. LG has held this position since 2021, overseeing various projects to determine the applicability of 6G communications technology and establish technical requirements.
