(CLO) On November 26, a senior Israeli official said that the country is likely to accept the ceasefire plan with Hezbollah proposed by the US.

The Israeli security cabinet is expected to meet later on Tuesday to discuss and possibly approve the document at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the official said, paving the way for a ceasefire proposed by US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron.

In Washington, White House national security spokesman John Kirby said on November 25 that "we are close" but "nothing will be done until everything is done." Meanwhile, the French presidency said that discussions on a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah had made significant progress.

The deal calls for Israeli troops to withdraw from southern Lebanon and Lebanese troops to deploy in the area within 60 days, officials said. Hezbollah will end its armed presence along the border south of the Litani River.

The proposal won approval in Beirut, where Lebanese Parliament Deputy Speaker Elias Bou Saab said there were no serious obstacles to the proposal unless Mr Netanyahu changed his mind.

A huge reconstruction bill awaits cash-strapped Lebanon, where more than 1 million people have been displaced and many have been left homeless as winter approaches. In Israel, the ceasefire will pave the way for 60,000 people to return to their homes in the north, where they fled when Hezbollah began firing rockets in support of its Palestinian ally Hamas a day after the Oct. 7, 2023, attack.

“As for the ceasefire, I think it will be implemented. Both sides are tired,” said Selim Ayoub, a 37-year-old mechanic from Beirut’s southern suburbs.

Speaking at a meeting of G7 foreign ministers in Italy on November 26, European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell urged the Israeli government to support the proposed ceasefire in Lebanon, saying the deal contained all the necessary security guarantees for Israel.

"Let's hope that today Netanyahu will accept the ceasefire proposed by the United States and France. There are no more excuses. There are no more additional demands," Borrell said, criticizing hardline Israeli ministers who have spoken out against the deal.
