From the image in movies as well as stories, we still think that pirates spread fear wherever they go. They are the nightmare of ship owners on the seas. One of the things that reminds us of pirates is the treasure chests with countless gold bars and jewelry, valuable items.

During a survey trip to an uninhabited island in the Aegean Sea – the long gulf of the Mediterranean, located between Greece and Türkiye, Greek archaeologists accidentally found the treasure of the pirate king. This huge treasure is located in a magnificent basilica located on the island.

From the information on a stone stele, they determined that this palace originally belonged to the pirate king Glauketis – a notorious pirate in the 4th century BC. The pirate king Glauketis had plundered a lot of wealth so he built the palace as a fortress on the island to protect his treasure chests.

The vast palace, consisting of 15 rooms, surrounded by massive stone walls, and also serving as a gateway to an important seaport, was built by none other than the ancient Byzantine Empire.

Inside the palace, archaeologists found many valuable artifacts, mostly ceramic pieces. They also discovered traces of many structures invested with expensive materials, including an altar and many marble columns.

According to the inscriptions on the stele, the pirate king Glauketis at that time received strong support from many residents in the area, but was eventually defeated by the Athenian government. During his glorious time, he lived on this mysterious island and many neighboring islands.

After the pirate king died, the island was inhabited by several different empires. Archaeologists have found evidence that ancient inhabitants lived here continuously from the 12th century BC to the 7th century AD until a plague forced them to leave the island.

Archaeologists are still conducting more excavations on this deserted island. They emphasize that the research is just beginning, this island and the pirate king's treasure still have a lot to discover.
