Leeds and Burnley promoted to Premier League

A 2-1 win over promotion rivals Sheffield United in the early hours of April 22 secured Burnley a return to the top flight. They, along with Leeds, who also beat Stoke City 6-0 earlier, are certain to finish in the top two of the 2024/25 Championship.

Leeds' promotion means a return to the Premier League for manager Daniel Farke, the German who led Norwich City to promotion in 2018/19 and 2020/21, while Burnley boss Scott Parker has won promotion with a Championship side for the third time.

The former England international has done the same with Fulham in 2019/20 and AFC Bournemouth in 2021/22. This is also a rare achievement in English football. After Leeds and Burnley have secured their places in the Premier League in 2025/26, another team from the Championship will gain promotion via the playoffs.

The teams ranked 3rd to 6th after 46 rounds will compete for the remaining spot. The playoff semi-finals, played over two legs, will see the 3rd-placed team face the 6th-placed team, while the 4th and 5th-placed teams will also meet.

The two semi-final winners will face off in the playoff final at Wembley Stadium on 24 May, to decide who will ultimately be promoted to the Premier League in 2025/26. Sheffield United and Sunderland are already assured of their playoff places, while Bristol City, Coventry, Middlesbrough, Milwall and even Blackburn Rovers are all in contention for the other two spots.
