Vietnamese chess player Le Quang Liem has entered the world top 13 after an impressive performance at the 2024 Chess Olympiad.
According to calculations by the Live Chess Ratings website, Le Quang Liem has increased 1 rank to 13th in the world after 3 matches at Olympiad 2024. Vietnam's number 1 chess player has added 4.1 elo.
In this tournament, Le Quang Liem won against Mohammad Fahad Rahman of Bangladesh and was awarded 1.3 elo. The victory over Makhnev Denis of Kazakhstan helped Le Quang Liem gain 2.5 elo. The draw with Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan helped Le Quang Liem gain 0.3 elo.
On the FIDE (International Chess Federation) chess rankings, Le Quang Liem's ranking has not been updated, still at world position 14. World position 14 is also the highest achievement in Le Quang Liem's career in particular, as well as the history of Vietnamese chess in general.
Therefore, it can be said that Le Quang Liem's rise to 13th place, according to Live Chess Ratings, is a new step forward for Vietnam's number 1 chess player.
Le Quang Liem made an important contribution to helping the Vietnamese Chess Team beat the 2022 champion Uzbekistan 3-1 at the 2024 Chess Olympiad.
This is the second time in history that the Vietnamese Chess Team has won all four first rounds in the Open group, after a similar achievement in 2010.
This victory is considered quite surprising because both Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (Elo coefficient 2,633) and Le Tuan Minh (2,564) are not rated as highly as their two opponents Javokhir Sindarov (2,677) and Nodirbek Yakubboev (2,666).
Compared to the victory against Estonia in the fourth round 14 years ago, this victory of the Vietnamese men's team is more impressive because Uzbekistan is the 2022 Olympiad champion and is the fourth seed in this year's tournament.
After two victories by Truong Son and Le Tuan Minh, Le Quang Liem (elo 2,741) and Tran Tuan Minh (elo 2,434) drew with Nodirbek Abdusattorov (2,766) and Jakhongir Vakhidov (2,571) respectively.
The Chess Olympiad is an international tournament organized by FIDE in Budapest, Hungary from September 10 to 23, 2024. The total number of participants in this tournament is 1,884. Of which, 975 are in the open group and 909 are in the women's category./.
