Oita Prefecture is located in the east of Kyushu Island, the closest region of Japan to Vietnam. It is known as the hot spring paradise and the capital of pears. In recent years, Oita has attracted many Vietnamese tourists because of its impressive landscape.
In particular, when coming to Oita in the fall, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy the world-famous Oita pear. This pear is plump, juicy, sweet and fragrant, and is often bought by visitors as a gift.
Oita pears are grown in the valley, surrounded by the Aso - Kuju volcano range, blessed with abundant, clean natural water from two large rivers. This place has a temperature difference of up to 20-25 degrees Celsius, an important condition for pears to thrive and produce large, crispy and sweet fruits. The Atago pear variety of the Oita pear brand once set a record with 2.5kg/2 fruits.
Oita pears must be carefully cared for to have large, beautiful, "round like the full moon" fruit. According to agricultural engineers here, pear trees will bloom at the end of April, requiring careful pollination using both manual methods and modern machinery. Proper pollination will create pear seeds inside the fruit, helping the pear to be large and round. If the pear has no seeds, it will be deformed.
After harvesting, pears are taken to a high-tech sorting center where they are checked for size, shape and sweetness. The sorting and packaging process is also invested in with a factory of thousands of square meters, containing modern machinery and strict operating procedures.
According to the Oita Prefecture Agricultural Development Bureau and Agricultural Products Export Promotion Division, Oita pear output this year is estimated at 3,000 tons.
Currently, Oita pears are popular in Japan and are exported to many countries. The pears are carefully selected, transported and brought to high-end shopping centers in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore... Currently, in Vietnam, Hosui pears are sold, measuring from 300-450 grams/fruit, priced at about 400,000-500,000 VND/kg. The expensive Oita pear variety - Niitaka, weighing from 600 grams to more than 1,000 grams each, has won a prestigious award for Japan's outstanding agricultural products, with prices ranging from 600,000-800,000 VND/kg.
