The teacher's first opening ceremony

Teacher Hoang Thi Lan has been working at Sang Tung Primary and Secondary School for less than a year. This opening ceremony is the first of her career.

Simple opening ceremony, 48 first and second graders at Ta Lung school attended together in one classroom.

Early in the morning, parents brought their children to class to help the teacher clean and decorate the classroom with a congratulatory banner. The teacher drew flowers and wrote greetings for the new school year on the board with colored chalk. Students wore their best clothes for the first day of class. Many stood at the door, folding their hands politely to greet the new teacher.

Ms. Hoang Thi Lan shared that she never thought she would have such a simple opening ceremony like today.

"I feel disappointed and a little sad, but I also feel more sorry for my children and love my job more. I just hope my children have better conditions so that they are happy when they go to school, attend class regularly and listen to their teachers," Ms. Hoang Thi Lan shared.

Ms. Lan was assigned to teach at Sang Tung Primary and Secondary School from the second semester of the previous school year. This year, she was assigned to Ta Lung school, teaching grade 2. This school is more than 70 kilometers from her home.

Away from home, but since going to school, she still feels lucky to be able to do the job she chose, helping children in the highlands learn to read and write.

Students attending school regularly is the teacher's reward.

Teacher Hoang Thi Hong Hanh, who teaches grade 1 at Ta Lung school, shared that out of her class of 26 students, 21 are from poor households. Some students are taken to school by their parents, but many others walk to class. Their homes are in the village, but some are so far away that it takes nearly an hour to walk over the mountains to get to class.

Ms. Hanh has worked at Sang Tung Primary and Secondary School for 15 years, almost every year she teaches at a far away school. Being used to hardship, the biggest reward for her on this opening day was that the class had 26 students. Ms. Hanh felt warm when none of the 26 students wore torn clothes, the children came to class, clasped their hands to greet her and then played freely with their new friends.

"The material conditions in the highlands are just like that, just having the children go to school is the biggest reward for us!" - Ms. Hanh smiled gently.

Teacher Hung Thi Hien - principal of Sang Tung Primary and Secondary School - said that the school still has 5 campuses with 159 first and second graders. The furthest campus is nearly ten kilometers from the commune center. The general policy of the district is to concentrate students at the main campus, but currently the school's facilities are not adequate.

"This school year, we have 428 primary school students and 363 secondary school students. If we gather at the main school, the school yard will not be enough to accommodate them. Furthermore, if we organize a concentrated opening ceremony, the first and second graders will not have their parents to pick them up. They are also not entitled to boarding benefits, so if they all return to the main school, the school will not be able to cook for them," said Ms. Hien.

According to Ms. Hien, compared to previous years, the road conditions in the commune have become much less difficult, but people are still poor. The local government and the school must gradually overcome this problem and bring students to study in the commune center. However, there are not enough boarding houses and classrooms. Dong Van district has approved the plan to prepare for the construction of the second facility of Sang Tung Primary and Secondary School.

"My teachers and students really hope that the second facility will be completed soon. At that time, the students will be able to study in a concentrated manner and have a boarding system, which will make things much easier," said Ms. Hien.
