On April 19th (corresponding to the 22nd day of the 3rd lunar month), a traditional ethnic festival and the reenactment of the Nang Hai Festival were held in Hop Thanh hamlet, Tien Thanh commune (Quang Hoa district), attracting a large number of locals and tourists.
In 2017, the Nang Hai Festival was recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage. This is a form of folk performance that combines dance, singing, and music within the cultural space of the village, serving as a ritual for praying for blessings and a good harvest.
The festival is held as a custom to pray for a good harvest, welcoming the Moon Goddess down to earth on the night of the 30th of the first lunar month and staying on earth until the 24th of the third lunar month, joining the local people in dancing and singing. To prepare for the Nàng Hai Festival, the villagers choose two beautiful girls to play the roles of Nàng Gường (wearing a red dress) and Nàng Sở (wearing a yellow dress). This is to commemorate Princess Tiên Giao of the Mạc dynasty and to invite the “Nàng Hai”—daughters of “Mother Moon”—to descend to earth to visit the fields, houses, and daily life, to help the people with their work and livelihoods, and to bless humanity with favorable weather, abundant harvests, and a prosperous and happy life.
The festival consists of three main parts: the welcoming ceremony for Nang Hai, the prayer ceremony, and the farewell ceremony for Nang Hai. In addition, the festival features a variety of cultural, artistic, and sporting activities such as: exhibitions of paintings and photographs about the people and homeland of Cao Bang; performances and exchanges of traditional folk songs; folk games: tug-of-war, throwing the ball; cultural performances celebrating the Party, the spring, and the renewal of the homeland; and exhibition spaces showcasing local cuisine and products.
The festival aims to promote and publicize the beauty of traditional culture and local ethnic identity, not only contributing to the preservation of traditional cultural values with strong national characteristics but also fostering community cohesion, encouraging and creating a joyful and enthusiastic atmosphere among the people to actively compete and work in production.
