(CLO) Although Christmas is a global festival, not every country celebrates this holiday.
More precisely, due to religious diversity and state regulations, these countries have a less “festive atmosphere” on December 25 than other places. Here are some typical countries:
1. Afghanistan
Because the Christian community in Afghanistan is small, Christmas is not recognized as an official holiday. Therefore, Christmas celebrations are mainly held within families and small communities.
2. North Korea
According to World Help, North Korea is a secular country, so there are no religious celebrations, including Christmas. North Korea banned all Christmas celebrations in 2016.
3. Algeria
In Algeria, Christmas is not a public holiday because Christianity is not the main religion there.
4. Somalia
As a Muslim-majority country, Somalia has banned Christmas celebrations, saying they are incompatible with the country's main religious beliefs.
5. China
Because of the small number of Christians in China, Christmas is not considered an official holiday. Instead, it has become an occasion for people to shop and have fun.
6. Uzbekistan
Due to the diverse religious characteristics with the majority of people being Muslim and a small number being Orthodox Christians (Christmas is on January 7), Christmas on December 25 is not a major holiday in Uzbekistan.
7. Bhutan
Since Buddhism is the main religion and Christianity is less popular, Christmas is not widely celebrated in Bhutan.
8. Libya
Libya is one of the countries that does not celebrate Christmas because it is against Islamic beliefs, Barnabas Aid said. The Libyan government confirmed this position in a statement in 2022.
