On May 10, specialist doctor Tran Anh Dung - director of Phu Yen General Hospital - said that the hospital had just performed retroperitoneal laparoscopic surgery to remove a "huge" sized coral kidney stone from a 61-year-old man.

According to specialist doctor II Nguyen Ton Hoang - deputy head of the general surgery department of Phu Yen General Hospital, patient P.D.T. (61 years old, in Dong Hoa town) was hospitalized with back pain, difficulty urinating, lower abdominal pain, and a history of kidney stones.

Doctors examined, performed ultrasound, and CT scan and discovered that the patient had coral stones in the kidney measuring 7x8x5cm (as big as a chicken egg).

The patient underwent retroperitoneal laparoscopic surgery to remove the stones.

After more than 60 minutes, the surgery was successful. The surgical team removed a "huge" kidney stone from patient T.'s kidney.

"Previously, patient T. had a history of kidney stones. His daily habit of drinking little water led to a condition where urinary tract stones easily formed.

At the same time, when the patient feels back pain but cannot distinguish between kidney stones and spinal diseases, simple muscle pain... so they do not go to the doctor.

Therefore, the stones will get bigger and bigger, if left for a long time, it will lead to hydronephrosis, infection, impaired kidney function and other dangerous complications" - Dr. Hoang said.

Should drink enough water

According to Dr. Hoang, urinary tract stones are a common disease. Stones can be located in different locations of the urinary tract such as kidney stones, ureteral stones, and bladder stones.

"Therefore, we must drink enough water every day. When experiencing symptoms of pain in the flank area, frequent urination, or painful urination, people should immediately go to a medical facility to be examined and treated by specialists to avoid unfortunate complications.

In cases where kidney stones are known to exist, regular check-ups are needed to detect developments and treat them promptly," Dr. Hoang recommends.
