On March 9, the leader of Thanh Vu Medic Bac Lieu General Hospital said that the hospital's doctors had just successfully removed a foreign object, a denture, from the esophagus of a 68-year-old patient.
The patient is Mrs. NTN (residing in Ta Lot A hamlet, Thanh Tri district, Soc Trang province). According to her family's statement to the hospital, while eating, Mrs. N. accidentally swallowed her entire dentures, which fell into her esophagus, causing pain, choking, and discomfort. Her family immediately took her to Thanh Vu Hospital.
Doctor Nguyen Phuoc Thom, who directly treated patient NTN, said that through examination, X-ray and endoscopy results showed a large foreign object deep in the patient's esophagus.
"We immediately removed the foreign object through endoscopy, taking out a 3cm long denture with a sharp metal hook. The procedure took 15 minutes. After removing the foreign object, the patient's health is now completely stable, no more pain, no difficulty swallowing, feeling comfortable, and was discharged home," said Dr. Thom.
According to Mr. Thom, recently Thanh Vu Hospital has received and removed foreign objects from many cases of patients choking on chicken bones, fish bones, toothpicks, and dentures...
For large foreign objects, if not detected early, there is a risk of the foreign object puncturing the esophagus, penetrating the blood vessels, causing infection, affecting health and life.
For the elderly, Mr. Thom recommends getting permanent dental implants to limit the occurrence of the above incidents. If you accidentally swallow dentures, do not try to stick them in your throat or swallow them to get rid of the foreign object, but go immediately to a reputable medical facility for timely examination and treatment.
