On the afternoon of April 21, in Oc Eo town, Thoai Son district, An Giang province, the Oc Eo Cultural Relic Management Board held a conference to deploy the work of building a dossier to nominate the Oc Eo-Ba The archaeological relic site in An Giang province to submit to the United NationsEducational , Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for recognition as a World Cultural Heritage.
Oc Eo-Ba The archaeological site is located in Oc Eo town, Thoai Son district, An Giang province, with a total planned conservation area of about 433.1 hectares, of which the area of the slopes and foot of Ba The mountain (area A) is nearly 144 hectares, and Oc Eo field (area B) is over 289 hectares.
The Oc Eo-Ba The relic is an important vestige of the Oc Eo civilization, which flourished in the Southern region from the 1st to the 7th century. This was one of the major trading centers of the ancient kingdom of Phu Nam, with a system of canals, architecture, and archaeological relics reflecting a high level of economic , cultural, and religious development.
An Giang province currently has more than 80 Oc Eo cultural relics, of which Oc Eo-Ba The relic is identified as having an important position, once an urban area, a port, a major economic-cultural center of the ancient kingdom of Phu Nam. In 2012, Oc Eo-Ba The relic was ranked as a special national relic by the Prime Minister.
On October 18, 2021, the Prime Minister agreed in principle to send a summary report of the Oc Eo-Ba The archaeological site dossier to UNESCO to propose to include it in the tentative list of World Heritage dossiers.
Mr. Nguyen Khac Nguyen, Deputy Director of the Oc Eo - Ba The Cultural Relic Management Board, said that with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO, the National Cultural Heritage Council and the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, the summary report of the nomination dossier for the Oc Eo - Ba The archaeological site as a World Cultural Heritage, phase 1, was completed on April 1, 2022.
UNESCO has agreed to put the Oc Eo-Ba The archaeological site on the Tentative List and prepare a dossier to nominate it as a World Cultural Heritage.
According to Mr. Nguyen Khac Nguyen, since the end of 2022, the People's Committee of An Giang province has issued a plan to develop nomination documents and invited the National Museum of History to establish a task outline and budget.
However, due to difficulties in the appraisal process, the task outline and budget will not be appraised and approved until the end of 2024.

The Oc Eo-Ba The Cultural Relic Management Board has urgently built and completed all tasks of planning to invite bids and organize bidding to select contractors according to the provisions of law.
At the conference, the Oc Eo-Ba The Cultural Relic Management Board announced that the joint venture of the Institute for Monuments Conservation - Center for Applied Geological, Heritage and Environmental Research - University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City, won bid package No. 3 "Preparing nomination dossiers and management plans for the Oc Eo-Ba The archaeological site in An Giang province to submit to UNESCO for recognition as a World Cultural Heritage."
Ms. Tran Thi Minh Hue, Deputy Director of the Institute for Monuments Conservation, said that Package No. 3 will be implemented from April 2025 to January 2026, focusing on investigating, surveying, and systematizing sources of documents and artifacts to determine the nature and value of the heritage of the Oc Eo-Ba The Cultural Relic Site; exploring and excavating archaeological sites to supplement documents; building maps and distribution diagrams of relics and analyzing material samples and metal components of the Oc Eo-Ba The relic and artifact system.
“In preparing the dossier to nominate the Oc Eo-Ba The Archaeological Site in An Giang province to submit to UNESCO for recognition as a World Cultural Heritage, the Institute for Monuments Conservation will coordinate with units to develop thematic content to justify the statement on the outstanding global values, integrity and authenticity of the nominated heritage; build a 'heritage story' connecting the criteria to clarify the outstanding global values of the Oc Eo-Ba The Archaeological Site heritage...,” Ms. Hue said.
According to Director of the Oc Eo-Ba The Cultural Relic Management Board Nguyen Huu Gieng, An Giang province strives to complete and defend the dossier to request UNESCO to recognize the Oc Eo-Ba The archaeological site as a World Cultural Heritage by 2026.
This is an important step in the effort to preserve and promote the unique historical and cultural values of the Oc Eo-Ba The relic site to the world./.
