Install right turn signs to reduce traffic jams at 50 intersections in Ho Chi Minh City

(Dan Tri) - The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport has installed 50 arrow information signs allowing right turns at red lights at intersections with suitable routes to reduce traffic jams.

On the afternoon of January 10, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport announced that it had installed arrow information signs allowing right turns at red lights at 50 intersections with heavy traffic such as: Dien Bien Phu - Pham Ngoc Thach (District 3), Pasteur - Dien Bien Phu (District 1 - District 3), Hai Ba Trung...

In addition, the transport sector will continue to review and install additional arrow signs at other intersections in the coming time.

According to Mr. Nguyen Xuan Vinh, Director of the Road Traffic Infrastructure Management Center (Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport), the newly applied Decree 168 with high fines has had a positive impact on traffic participants.

In recent days, people have been more compliant when stopping at red lights and limiting right turns. However, this has also led to more congestion at some intersections.

Lieutenant Colonel Le Van Hai, Deputy Head of the Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Police Department (PC08), assessed that the implementation of Decree 168 has had a positive impact on the compliance of traffic participants in the area. Through consulting the opinions of many agencies, traffic participants have complied well, traffic congestion and pedestrians on the sidewalk are very limited. When stopping at red lights, people stop very legally and do not dare to overtake or turn right when the light is red.

A delivery man waiting at the red light at Hai Ba Trung intersection (District 1) said that the time it took him to deliver his orders in recent days has doubled compared to more than a week ago. "Some customers complained about the long wait, while others sympathized with the traffic jams and couldn't go fast," he said.

Traffic jams have broken out in recent days, in many areas the traffic lights are green but vehicles cannot move, such as on Tran Quoc Thao Street, District 3 (Photo: Thu Tran).

Reporting to Dan Tri on the afternoon of January 9, Ms. Phan Thi Phuong Nhi (28 years old, living in Phu Nhuan district) said that she had just traveled from Phu Nhuan district to District 1 for work. However, with a distance of only about 5km, this woman took more than 30 minutes to travel.

"I think everyone feels that traffic jams and congestion in Ho Chi Minh City are very common these days. In the afternoon, it takes almost double or triple the time to get home compared to before. When booking a ride-hailing service, you have to wait forever for a ride, almost for a very long time," Ms. Nhi complained.

According to Decree 168, drivers of cars or similar vehicles will be fined VND18-20 million if they commit the following violations: not following traffic lights or signals, instructions of traffic controllers; driving in the wrong direction on a one-way street, or driving in the wrong direction on a street with a "no entry" sign. In addition to the fine, violators will also have their driving license deducted 3 points.

This fine is more than three times higher than Decree 100 and Decree 123. Currently, drivers who run red lights or commit the above acts will be fined 4-6 million VND. Drivers will also have their driving licenses revoked for one to three months.

For motorcyclists, the fine for running a red light is 4-6 million VND (Decree 100 and Decree 123 is 800,000-1 million VND); driving in the wrong direction is 4-6 million VND (Decree 100 and Decree 123 is 1-2 million VND); weaving and swerving is 8-10 million VND (Decree 100 and Decree 123 is 6-8 million VND)...
