Lao Cai approved to increase capacity of small hydropower, solar power, biomass power, waste-to-energy

Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son has just signed Decision No. 768/QD-TTg dated April 15, 2025 of the Prime Minister approving the Adjustment of the National Power Development Plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050 (Power Plan VIII).

According to the adjusted Plan, by 2030, the total capacity of power plants serving domestic demand (excluding exports) will be 183,291 - 236,363 MW.

Lao Cai has great potential for hydropower.

Accordingly, for Lao Cai province, the total additional capacity of small hydropower in the 2025 - 2030 period is 311.9 MW, and in the 2031 - 2035 period is 270.7 MW. Meanwhile, the rooftop solar power capacity in the 2025 - 2030 period increases by 550 MW, in the 2031 - 2035 period increases by 33 MW, and concentrated solar power in the 2025 - 2030 period increases by 10% MW.

Hydropower contributes stably to the province's industrial production value.

Waste-to-energy capacity in the 2025-2030 period will increase by 12 MW; biomass power in the 2025-2030 period will increase by 32 MW, and in the 2031-2035 period will increase by 18 MW.
