Preliminary statistics show that the circulation of storm Yagi caused heavy rain and floods, severely affecting the entire Lao Cai province, with total damage of nearly 6,000 billion VND, thereby strongly affecting local tourism.
In addition to the obvious damage to facilities and service infrastructure, other immediate and long-term damage to the tourism industry is difficult to measure.
Over the past two weeks, the number of tourists to Lao Cai has decreased by 70-80%, mainly due to information related to safety during the rainy season and traffic disruption.
According to Mr. Nguyen Quoc Huy, Director of Lao Cai Province Department of Transport, up to now, basically all traffic routes have been restored in step 1 to communes; striving to have at least 2 lanes of traffic on national highways, provincial roads and inter-commune roads in October. During the recovery process, the tourism industry is requested to coordinate closely to promptly inform tourists.
“Based on the routes we announce by location such as provincial roads, national highways, district routes, and commune routes, we suggest that the tourism industry add the names of related tourist areas and spots, then attach them to tourism news so that everyone knows.”
Representatives of relevant sectors also participated in many discussions on solutions to restore the smokeless industry, such as restoring tourist trains; orienting the development of community tourism in concentrated residential areas for people in disaster-hit areas to relocate to; building a museum of evidence of typhoon Yagi; support policies and removing difficulties for businesses; discount programs to stimulate tourism after floods; communication and promotion issues...
Speaking at the meeting, Ms. Giang Thi Dung, Vice Chairwoman of Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee, requested that sectors and localities focus highly and urgently on restoring the province's key economic sector, striving to welcome more than 2 million more visitors by the end of the year to achieve the set target of 8.5 million visitors this year.
“During the storm, all activities had to be canceled. But after the situation is resolved, we have to reorganize because if there are no activities, tourists will not know what to experience. We suggest that the tourism industry take the initiative to organize promotional activities and tourism activities in localities to attract tourists.”
It is expected that from now until the end of the year in Lao Cai there will be a number of outstanding tourism events such as the Red River Festival, Brocade Festival, Bat Xat Autumn Festival, “One track, two countries” cycling race, Mountain Marathon; tourism promotion with China, Korea, etc.
