North Korea's state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on December 1 that leader Kim Jong-un visited the air force command on November 30 to mark the force's anniversary. There, Kim gave strategic operational directions to improve the military's readiness and combat capabilities, Reuters reported.

Kim Jong-un then visited a fighter unit and watched the pilots perform an aerial display. Kim praised the pilots' readiness to carry out combat missions without any problems regardless of adverse conditions.

Last week, North Korea successfully launched a military spy satellite to monitor military movements of the US and South Korea. In recent days, the country claimed that the satellite had taken pictures of many strategic bases of the two allies and other important locations such as the White House.

South Korea partially suspended a 2018 inter-Korean military agreement in response and stepped up surveillance along the inter-Korean border. In response, North Korea completely voided the agreement and said it would deploy more armed forces and stronger weapons to the border.

The United States and its allies have condemned North Korea's satellite launch, calling it a violation of multiple UN Security Council resolutions banning the use of ballistic missile technology. North Korea has vowed to launch more satellites and says it is only exercising its right to self-defense.

The US Treasury Department on November 30 announced new sanctions against KIMSUKY, an alleged North Korean cyber espionage group, and eight of Pyongyang’s overseas agents. These individuals and organizations are accused of helping to evade sanctions to support North Korea’s weapons of mass destruction program, according to Yonhap.

The new ban was implemented in coordination with South Korea, Japan and Australia, in response to North Korea's satellite launch on November 21.
