Iranian state media said Haniyeh, who has been residing between Qatar and Türkiye since 2019, "briefed Khamenei on the latest developments in the Gaza Strip…".

“Ayatollah Khamenei praised the steadfastness and resilience of the Gaza people and expressed regret for the crimes committed by the Zionist regime, which is directly supported by Washington and some Western countries,” Iranian state television announced.

Without giving details of when the meeting took place, Iran's Tasnim news agency said the country's supreme leader, Mr Khamenei, "stressed Tehran's consistent policy of supporting the Palestinian resistance against the Zionist occupation".

Iran has warned Israel, which it refuses to recognise, of “harsh consequences” if attacks continue in the Gaza Strip.

As fighting threatens to spread across the Middle East, Lebanon’s government recently said fighting on its border with Israel is escalating and becoming more complex. In the latest incident, Lebanon alleged that an Israeli attack on a car in southern Lebanon killed three children and their grandmother.

An Israeli military spokesman said it had struck “Hezbollah terrorist targets in southern Lebanon” in response to a rocket attack on a tank that killed an Israeli citizen earlier. He said a Hezbollah drone was also shot down.

Hezbollah said it responded by firing rockets at the northern Israeli town of Kiryat Shmona. The group said it would never tolerate attacks on civilians and its response would be “firm and strong”.

Sirens sounded across central Israel, while Israeli media reported rockets hitting areas in and around Tel Aviv. No casualties were reported.
