Late afternoon, many chili fields in Dong Tam village (Tien Dong commune, Tu Ky district, Hai Duong province) are still working. Looking at the green chili fields with lots of fruit, the farmers here hope for a good harvest.
Despite the storm, chili farmers in Dong Tam still hope for victory.
Being present in the lush green chili fields, Dan Viet reporters felt that the healthy, green, vibrant chili plants with plump green fruits under the green leaves would give high productivity and yield of chili for farmers.
In the chili field, Mr. Pham Khac Than, 69 years old, is taking care of and meticulously checking the chili plants. When he discovers any chili branches that are hanging down, he immediately ties them to the fences to ensure that the branches and plants are sturdy and stable so they do not break or fall.

Mr. Than shared that his family has 1.1 hectares of rice fields, of which he grows 5 sao of bananas, 2 sao of eggplants, 2 sao of cabbage, and 2 sao of chili. As for chili, Mr. Than has been growing it for nearly ten years.
According to Mr. Than, this year's chili crop has developed beautifully, with many fruits, evenly distributed. Mr. Than believes that this year's chili crop will have high productivity and output. If the price is high and stable, the chili crop will be successful.
Mr. Than also said that in previous chili crops, the price of chili was at times as high as 40-50 thousand VND/kg, and at the end of the season, the price reached 15 thousand VND/kg. The harvest period lasts 5-6 months.
In previous chili crops, Mr. Than earned more than 20 million VND per sao. With 2 sao of chili, Mr. Than earned about 40 million VND, after deducting expenses, Mr. Than earned nearly 30 million VND. Combined with other crops, each year Mr. Than earned 60 - 70 million VND.
After many years of growing chili, Mr. Than has assessed that chili plants have high economic value, often 3 times higher than rice plants. Mr. Than also plans to expand the chili growing area to increase income if he has no other obligations or his health allows.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thach's family has also been growing chili for ten years. His family also grows 2 sao of chili. Usually, each sao will yield 5-6 quintals of chili. Although the price of chili varies between high and low times, on average, each sao will yield 20 million VND. With 2 sao of chili, after deducting expenses, Mr. Thach's family still makes a profit of nearly 30 million VND.
Mr. Thach said that this year, chili farmers in Dong Tam encountered many difficulties. Because before, when the plants were in the development stage, storm No. 3 came. The strong storm, strong winds, and heavy rains knocked down, hit the plants or flooded, so many chili areas were severely affected. In the damaged chili areas that could not be restored, people were forced to replace them with cabbage.
The remaining areas of chili peppers, which were damaged, were taken care of and restored by the people. Many chili pepper fields are now growing beautifully, with plants bearing fruit in equal amounts. In a few days, the chili pepper fields of Dong Tam farmers will enter the harvest season. Mr. Thach and other chili pepper growers in Dong Tam also hope that this year's chili crop will be successful.
Similar to Mr. Than's opinion, Mr. Thach also said that chili is a plant with 3-4 times higher economic value than rice.
Dong Tam chili farmers' professional association develops both in membership and area
According to Ms. Hoang Thi Xoan, Chairwoman of the Farmers' Association of Tien Dong Commune, implementing the direction of the Farmers' Association of Tu Ky District on the establishment of professional farmers' associations, in 2023, the Farmers' Association of the Commune organized the establishment and launch of the professional association of chili farmers in Dong Tam village. Upon establishment, members of this professional association were further trained in chili growing techniques for export.
With the characteristics and habits of the cadres and members of the Dong Tam village farmer association, which has been producing chili for export for many years with high income value, this is the basis for the Commune Farmer Association to believe that when establishing a professional association of Dong Tam chili export farmers, it will develop.
After more than 1 year of operation, the Dong Tam chili export farmers' professional association has rapidly grown in both members and area, with income from chili being quite high compared to some other crops.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thach, 69 years old, Head of the Dong Tam Chili Export Farmers Association, said that in 2023, the Dong Tam Chili Export Farmers Association was established and launched, initially with 21 members, producing on an area of 4 hectares.
According to Mr. Thach, because Dong Tam farmers have been growing chili for more than ten years, there was no difficulty or confusion when establishing the group. Because it is the regular work of Dong Tam people.
With the support and assistance of the Commune and District Farmers' Associations, members of the Group have access to science and technology on cultivation, which is trained by the higher level associations; access to policies on production loans, deferred payment of fertilizers... The Association has also promptly shared with members of the Group the damage after storm No. 3, the Association has supported 200,000 VND/member for the seed season to replant chili after the storm.
The members of the group, whoever has good techniques and experiences, help each other with techniques and experiences in growing and caring for chili plants; help each other access information on market prices and output for the products. Therefore, the members of the group are always united, helping each other to develop chili cultivation to increase income.
Assessing the economic efficiency of chili peppers in Dong Tam village, Mr. Thach also informed that the price of chili peppers sometimes goes up and down, but is still at a level that helps chili pepper growers make a profit. Previously, when chili pepper prices were high, profits were higher, but now, chili pepper prices are lower than before, so profits are also significantly lower. In previous years, chili pepper prices were high, such as in 2016, when chili pepper prices reached 90,000 VND/kg, then suddenly dropped to 15,000 VND/kg.
By 2020-2021, the price will be high again, at 90-95 thousand VND/kg. In 2023, the price of chili will decrease to only 47 thousand VND/kg; at the end of the season, the price will be 15 thousand VND/kg. As for this year 2024, we don't know what the price will be?
In general, through evaluation, growing chili gives good economic efficiency, the harvest time is long and the price is also at a level that helps chili growers make a profit. If the situation during the harvest season, the amount of chili is large, but difficult to sell or the price is low, the members of the group will dry it to grind into chili powder, which can also be sold at a high price.
Mr. Thach calculated that if calculating the income per hectare, chili plants in Dong Tam would have an economic value of about 270 million VND/ha.
Mr. Thach also happily added that in 2024, the Group attracted and admitted 11 new members, bringing the total number of members to 32, with a total chili growing area of 6 hectares.
Dan Viet reporters were able to see and hear Dong Tam residents talk about chili plants and realized that although the people faced many difficulties caused by storm No. 3, they tried to overcome them and also believed that their chili harvest would be successful.
