The Lunar New Year of Giap Thin 2024 is approaching, but the atmosphere in Pho Tho - Ba Bo ornamental flower village (the largest flower village in Can Tho City) is still quite quiet. Most gardeners have reduced the number of plants by about 50% compared to last year for fear of unsold products.
Many gardeners said that this year the economy is difficult, the weather is unfavorable, and they are afraid that they will not be able to sell the large amount of flowers, so they have reduced the quantity and mainly plant according to orders. The main types of flowers grown are marigolds, chrysanthemums, Taiwan chrysanthemums, lisianthus, and nightshades.
Mr. Doan Huu planted about 500 pots of colorful chrysanthemums, most of which have been pre-ordered by customers.
Mr. Pham Van Ut (50 years old, living in Binh Thuy District) said: "Last year, my family planted 2,000 pots. This year, seeing the difficult economic situation, afraid of unsold products, I planted 1,200 pots of various flowers."
Nearby, Ms. Tran Thi Kim Nga (55 years old) also shares the same concern. For Tet 2023, she planted 2,000 pots, but this year she only has 1,000 pots, most of which have been ordered by traders.
Mr. Doan Huu Bon, Director of Binh An Ornamental Flower Cooperative and Deputy Head of Pho Tho - Ba Bo Ornamental Flower Village, predicted that this year's purchasing power would decrease, so he reduced the number of traditional yellow chrysanthemums and switched to planting 500 pots of multi-colored Korean chrysanthemums (purple, pink, red, yellow). Up to now, customers have ordered almost all of them, he just takes care of them until the delivery date.
Pots of colorful chrysanthemums grow well, promising to bloom beautifully during Tet holiday.
"If we count the number of ornamental flowers of all kinds, I grow more than 1,200 pots to serve the Tet market. Of which, there are about 500 pots of colorful chrysanthemums, most of which have been ordered by owners of tourist areas in Can Tho. These are the varieties I planted on a trial basis last year. Understanding the characteristics of this type of flower, this year I increased the quantity by 3-4 times and timed the planting so that the plants bloom in time for Tet," said Mr. Bon.
According to information from the Binh Thuy District Agricultural Extension Station (Can Tho City), this year the district's flower village will bring to the market over 286,500 pots of ornamental flowers of all kinds. It is expected that the price of flowers for the 2024 Lunar New Year will not increase compared to 2023.
