Spreading the aspirations of ethnic minority students and youth on the path to the future

Timely commendation and encouragement of students, university students and ethnic minority youth

2024 is the 11th year that the Ethnic Committee (EC) presides over and coordinates with the Ministry of Education and Training and the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union to organize the Ceremony to honor outstanding and exemplary ethnic minority students and youth. Ethnic and Development Newspaper is assigned to be the permanent unit to organize this important event.

This is an annual activity that has created a widespread influence; encouraging and motivating the young generation across the country, especially the young generation of ethnic minorities, to strive to excel in studying, training, and being creative in labor and production, creating the necessary provisions to become future owners of the country.

Speaking at the Ceremony to honor outstanding and exemplary ethnic minority students and youth in 2024, Minister and Chairman of the Ethnic Minorities Committee Hau A Lenh emphasized: Education and training is the top national policy, the cause of the Party, the State, and the entire people, and is an important basis for implementing the policy of equality, solidarity, respect, and mutual assistance for development among ethnic groups.

In recent years, with the special attention of the Party and the State, ethnic education has developed strongly, the network of schools in ethnic minority and mountainous areas has been increasingly consolidated and developed, all levels of education from preschool, general education to college and university, creating conditions for ethnic minority children to have the opportunity to access knowledge about culture, science, technology, and the work of preserving and developing the language and writing of their ethnic groups.

The system of specialized schools has been consolidated and gradually developed to meet the learning needs of students in ethnic minority and mountainous areas. Currently, the country has 318 boarding schools for ethnic minorities in 48 provinces and cities and 1,213 semi-boarding schools for ethnic minorities in 29 provinces and cities, the rate of schools meeting national standards is 58%. The system of specialized schools has been changing the quality of education in ethnic minority and mountainous areas. In the 2023-2024 school year, the rate of good and excellent students in the system of boarding and semi-boarding schools for ethnic minorities will reach over 60%, over 97% of students will graduate from junior high school and many students will be admitted directly to universities nationwide.

At the 2024 commendation ceremony, 125 students and young people from 33 ethnic groups (including 12 students and young people from 11 ethnic groups with special difficulties and very small ethnic minorities) from 39 provinces and cities across the country were commended.

Of these, 29 students won First, Second, and Third prizes in the national excellent student competition for the 2023-2024 school year; 8 students won First and Second prizes in the national and international Science and Technology competition; 54 students were admitted to universities and academies with a total score of 28 points or higher in the combination of 3 university entrance subjects (excluding priority points); 11 students from ethnic groups with special difficulties and ethnic minorities who have very few people admitted to universities; 12 students won Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals in national and international sports competitions; 11 young people achieved outstanding and outstanding achievements in various fields.

Spreading role models

The Commendation Ceremony has further motivated ethnic minority students across the country to strive for success in their careers, contributing to the development of ethnic minority human resources in the cause of national construction and defense.

Hang Thi Mai, a Mong ethnic student at the Military Technical Academy from Si Ma Cai, Lao Cai, emotionally said: I am very honored and proud to be honored at the ceremony to honor outstanding and exemplary ethnic minority students and youth in 2024. This will be a motivation for me to continue to strive and study hard to achieve higher results, and in the future become useful citizens to contribute to my homeland and country.

As for Kim Phat, a Khmer ethnic, a Youth Union officer of Hoa Loi commune, Chau Thanh district, Tra Vinh province, said: being honored at the Commendation Ceremony is a valuable and great source of encouragement for the young generation like us to continue to make efforts in studying and working.

The results of the academic and labor achievements of students and young people through the commendation periods show the effectiveness of investment policies for socio-economic development in ethnic minority areas in general and education in ethnic minority areas in the whole country in particular.

Speaking at the Commendation Ceremony for Outstanding Ethnic Minority Students and Youth in 2024, Politburo member and Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh affirmed: The Commendation Ceremony for Outstanding Ethnic Minority Students and Youth is a meaningful socio-political event that has a widespread influence in society; each typical and advanced example is a shining example that needs to be replicated so that people of all ethnic groups believe in the policies of the Party and State.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh also believes that ethnic minority and mountainous areas will increasingly develop, and believes that his children will contribute to enriching the national spirit, bringing glory to their homeland and country.

“The students, university students and young people of ethnic minorities who were honored today have achieved very admirable achievements. Each small success today will be a solid brick to build a bright future for them. Every day, we need to accumulate and cherish each brick like that. Let's continue to move forward, carrying with us our aspirations and pride in our nation and ourselves. I hope that you will continue to strive, improve your knowledge and skills, practice and cultivate your morality to confidently enter the new era, the era of the Vietnamese people's rise,” the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized.
