President Ramaphosa announced the Tuynhuys peace mission in Cape Town during a visit by Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
Mr. Ramaphosa emphasized that the impact of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia on food security in Africa has motivated the six leaders of Zambia, Senegal, Congo, Uganda, Egypt and South Africa to carry out a peace mission.
The South African president raised the idea of the mission with his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts in two separate phone calls over the weekend, and both leaders accepted the offer.
"My discussions with the Russian and Ukrainian presidents have demonstrated that both are ready to host African leaders and engage in discussions on how to end this conflict. Whether that will be successful or not will depend on the discussions that are about to take place," Mr Ramaphosa said.
More than a year after the Russia-Ukraine conflict, South Africa continues to maintain its non-aligned stance. President Ramaphosa said preparations would begin in earnest for the visit of African leaders.
