The Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports , in coordination with the Vietnam Cultural Heritage Association and Long Bien District, organized the 2023 Tug-of-war Rituals and Games Performance Festival representing the intangible cultural heritage of humanity, on November 17-18.
This is the first time the event has been organized to enhance connection and exchange between communities practicing the Heritage of Ritual and Tug of War in Vietnam and countries with UNESCO-recognized heritage.

The festival has the participation of nearly 500 artisans and practitioners of Tug of War rituals and games from Bac Ninh, Lao Cai, Vinh Phuc provinces, Hanoi city and Dangjin city (Chungcheongnam, Korea).
The Tug of War Festival 2023 includes a series of events taking place in parallel and concurrently with the Hanoi Creative Design Festival 2023.
On November 17th, a seminar on heritage education in tug-of-war with the Gijisi Tug-of-War Association (Dangjin City, South Korea) will be held at the Hanoi Museum, with the participation of over 50 delegates from the Gijisi Tug-of-War Association (Dangjin City, South Korea), museums, historical sites, and universities in Hanoi.
The seminar aims to share and exchange experiences in organizing educational activities on intangible cultural heritage in general and tug-of-war rituals and games in particular.
At the event, Gijisi Tug of War Museum will present the Tug of War Education Box of Gijisi Tug of War Museum to Hanoi Museum, demonstrate the heritage of Korean Gijisi Tug of War Ritual and Game and experience activities for the public and students.
On the same day, November 17, the exhibition "One Rope" displaying panels, articles and images introducing the value, meaning and form of tug-of-war rituals and games in four countries (Cambodia, Philippines, Korea and Vietnam) will be held at Tran Vu temple, Thach Ban ward, Long Bien district.
On November 18, the International Seminar on Preserving and Promoting Tug-of-war Rituals and Games in Contemporary Life also took place at Tran Vu Temple.
The event also included an exchange and demonstration of tug-of-war rituals and games, with the participation of the Gijisi Tug-of-War Association (Dangjin City, South Korea) and seven tug-of-war communities in Vietnam, including: seated tug-of-war at Tran Vu Temple (Long Bien District, Hanoi); tug-of-war in Xuan Lai village (Soc Son District, Hanoi); tug-of-war in Ngai Khe village (Phu Xuyen District, Hanoi); tug-of-war in Huu Chap village (Bac Ninh City, Bac Ninh Province); double tug-of-war in Huong Canh town (Binh Xuyen District, Vinh Phuc Province); tug-of-war in Hoa Loan village (Vinh Tuong District, Vinh Phuc Province); and tug-of-war of the Tay ethnic community (Bac Ha District, Lao Cai Province).
In 2015, Tug of War rituals and games in Cambodia, the Philippines, Korea and Vietnam were inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Vietnam has four localities, including Lao Cai, Vinh Phuc, Bac Ninh, and Hanoi, with inscribed heritage sites. |
